INS NAVIGATION UNIT - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
_____________________________________
1. INS Navigation Unit and Battery Charger Test
____________________________________________
A. General This test consists of two parts for airplanes with Delco INS navigation units. The first part tests the basic INS and the second tests the self-contained battery charger. These tests may be done in sequence, or either test may be performed separately. On airplanes with Litton navigation units only the INS navigation unit is tested.
(1)
The INS navigation unit test (paragraph E) tests all indicating lamps and displays for the INS and tests the INS digital computer unit input/output operation.
(2)
The battery charger is internal to the navigation unit with no external controls, indicators or failure monitors. The INS navigation unit battery charger test (paragraph F) verifies proper battery charger operation and is valid for any navigation unit and its associated battery unit.
(3)
The battery charger is internal to the navigation unit with no external controls, indicators or failure monitors. The inertial navigation unit battery charger test verifies proper battery charger operation and is valid for any navigation unit and its associated battery unit.
B. Referenced Procedures
(1)
21-58-00, Equipment Cooling - Adjustment/Test (Operational Test)
(2)
24-22-00, Manual Control - Maintenance Practices (Apply Power)
C. Equipment and Materials
NOTE: The following equipment and materials are required only for the
____
INS navigation unit battery charger test.
(1)
Ammeter - 0 to 3 amps dc (Shurite, Lafayette catalog No. 38E60962 or equivalent)
(2)
Universal Meter Case - Lafayette catalog No. 12E83167 or equivalent
(3)
Clips (2) - Meuller No. 48B or equivalent
(4)
Flexible Insulators for Clips (2) - Mueller No. 49 or equivalent
(5)
Meter Lead Cable - No. 18 AWG (Belden No. 8899 or equivalent) two 18 inch lengths
D. Prepare for Test
(1)
Set mode selector switch on each mode selector unit (pilots' overhead panel P5) to OFF position.
(2)
Verify that STANDBY IGNITION switch on overhead panel P5 is in NORM position.
(3)
Provide electrical power (Ref 24-22-00).
(4)
Supply equipment cooling (Ref 21-58-00).
CAUTION: ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO NAVIGATION UNITS
_______ BEFORE OPERATING INS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.

(5)
On the P7 (or P126) overhead electronic circuit breaker panel, close both PWR-INS circuit breakers for appropriate INS system.
(6)
On airplanes with PMS, when the INS is in the PMS waypoint control mode; control of the INS is through the PMS CDU, and the INS CDU operates only as a display unit. To operate the INS totally independent of the PMS, open the PMS circuit breakers (Ref 34-62).
E. Test (DELCO) INS Navigation Unit (ATLAS ALL EXCEPT IB 406-499)
(1) Turn-on check and lamp test.
(a) Set mode selector switch on appropriate MSU to ALIGN. On control/display unit (CDU) and MSU check that: 1) Red, amber and green lamps do not illuminate.
NOTE: Some lights, including the red WARN light and green
____ READY NAV light, may flash briefly at turn-on.
2) CDU INSERT key is illuminated.
(b) Place data selector on appropriate CDU to POS and press and hold TEST switch. Check that: 1) All keys (except keyboard and CLEAR keys) and lamps on CDU
and MSU illuminate. 2) Numerals 88.88.8 N/S are displayed in left-hand CDU data display. 3) Numerals 888.88.8 E/W are displayed in right-hand CDU data display. 4) Numerals 8 8 are displayed in CDU FROM-TO display.
(2) If INS is no longer required, restore airplane to normal.
