 (1)  34-41-03/401 INS Navigation Unit
 C. Prepare for cleaning
 (1)  Remove the INS Navigation Units (Ref 34-41-03/401).
 (a)  Identify the INUs as 1, 2 and 3 for subsequent installation.
 D. Procedure
 (1)  Clean the heat exchanger covers.
 (a)
Visually check the air intake holes in the left and right analog section heat exchanger covers and in the rear of the unit.

 (b)
If the build up of dirt or other material is noted, clean the air intake holes using a brush and vacuum cleaner.

 (c)
If after cleaning, dirt buildup is still noted on the heat exchanger, take the unit to the workshops for further cleaning.

 INS BATTERY UNIT - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION
_______________________________________
 1.  General_______(See figure 401.)
 A.  The battery units (BU) are mounted on shelf E12 just forward of the main equipment center bulkhead.
 B.  Open circuit breaker on front of battery unit before removing unit and disconnecting electrical connectors. Ensure that circuit breaker is open when installing unit in battery rack.
 (1)
When installing battery unit, slide unit onto shelf, engage camlock handles in shelf fork assemblies and use to fully seat connector at rear of units.

 (2)
When connector is fully seated, a noticeable increase in pressure is felt in locking levers. At this point, thread fork assembly in or out until locking levers are 0.50 to 0.60 inch from locked position. (See figure 401.)

 (3)
Seat locking levers into handle.

 (4)
Close circuit breaker on front of battery unit.

 C.  After installing BU, test unit by performing INS battery unit test. (Refer to 34-41-04, INS Battery Unit - Adjustment/Test.)

 INS BATTERY UNIT - ADJUSTMENT/TEST
__________________________________
 1. INS Battery Unit Test
_____________________
 A. General
 (1)  This test of the INS battery unit verifies proper battery installation, and tests the battery unit under full load conditions.
 B. Referenced Procedures
 (1)
21-58-00, Adjustment/Test (Operational Test)

 (2)
24-22-00, Maintenance Practices (Apply Power)

 C. Prepare for Test
 (1)
Set each INS mode selector switch (pilots' overhead panel P5) to OFF position.

 (2)
Provide electrical power (Ref 24-22-00).

 (3)
Provide cooling air to INS equipment (Ref 21-58-00).

CAUTION: ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO NAVIGATION UNITS
_______ BEFORE OPERATING INS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.
 (4)
On electronic circuit breaker panel P7 (or P126), close both PWR-INS circuit breakers for appropriate INS system.

 (5)
Ensure that circuit breaker on front of battery unit is closed.

 (6)
On airplanes with PMS, when the INS is in the PMS waypoint control mode, control of the INS is through the PMS CDU, and the INS CDU operates only as a display unit. To operate the INS totally independent of the PMS, open the PMS circuit breakers (Ref 34-62).

 D. Test INS Battery Unit
 (1)  On airplanes with Delco INS,
 verify proper INS battery installation.

NOTE: INS cannot be turned on unless battery unit is properly
____
 installed.

 (a)  Set appropriate INS mode selector switch on pilots' overhead panel P5 to ALIGN. Check that: 1) Red, amber, and green lamps do not illuminate.
NOTE: Some lights, including the red WARN light and green
____ READY NAV light, may flash briefly at turn-on.
 2) CDU INSERT key is illuminated.
 (2)  On airplanes with Litton LTN-72 INS,
