On airplanes with PMS, if the INS is in the PMS waypoint control mode, waypoint data for lateral navigation is loaded at the PMS CDU. In the PMS waypoint control mode, the INS CDU's operate only as display units, control of the INS is through the PMS CDU. Proper completion of this test requires that the PMS not be operational during the test.
(11)
The Prepare For Test procedure must be completed before the system test can be accomplished. However, the Prepare For Test procedure does not need to be repeated for each test if two or more tests are to be performed in sequence.
(12)
At the completion of the test(s), restore airplane to normal. (Refer to paragraph F.)

(1)
Verify setting of Mode Selector Unit remote access switch.
(a)
Remove the two screws securing the access cover to the mode selector unit.
(b)
Verify that the remote access switch is set to the OFF position.
(c)
Replace the access cover.
(2)
Set mode selector switch on each mode selector unit (pilots' overhead panel P5) to OFF position.
(3)
On each control display unit in forward (P9) and aft (P8) electronic panels, place AUTO/MAN/RMT switches in MAN position.
(4)
Set both CAPT's and F/O's VOR-ILS/INS switches to INS.
(5)
Verify that STANDBY IGNITION switch on overhead P5 panel is in NORM position.
(6)
On flight engineer's panel, set STANDBY POWER switch to MANUAL ON position.
(7)
Set ATT/COMP STAB switch on the captain's main instrument panel to CAPT 1 - F/O 2 position.
(8)
Set INS switch on the captain's main instrument panel to CAPT 1 -F/O 2 position.
(9)
Provide electrical power. Refer to 24-22-00.
(10)
Check for proper operation of pilots' panel illumination, indicator lamps and annunciator lights using master test and dim control. Refer to 33-11-00.
(11)
Ensure inertial navigation systems No. 1, 2 and 3 have battery, control/display and mode selector units properly installed.
(12)
Provide cooling air to INS equipment. Refer to 21-58-00.
CAUTION: ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO NAVIGATION UNITS
_______ BEFORE OPERATING INS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.
(13)
Test INS cooling fan operation.
(a)
Open both PWR-INS 1, both PWR-INS 2 and both PWR-INS 3 circuit breakers.
(b)
Close and then open pair of PWR-INS 1 circuit breakers. Listen for pitch of INS No. 1 fan to first increase and then decrease as circuit breakers are closed and then opened.
(c)
Repeat step (b) for INS No. 2 fan using PWR-INS 2 circuit breakers.
(d)
Repeat step (b) for INS No. 3 fan using PWR-INS 3 circuit breakers.
