 D. Prepare for Test
 (1)  
Set mode selector switch on each mode selector unit (pilots' overhead panel P5) to OFF position.

 (2)  
Set both CAPT's and F/O's VOR-ILS/INS switches to INS.

 (3)  
Verify that STANDBY IGNITION switch on overhead P5 panel is in NORM position.

 (4)  
On ATLAS ALL EXCEPT AT 701-750, set ATT/COMP STAB switch on the captain's main instrument panel to CAPT 1 - F/O 2 position. On AT 701-750, set ATTITUDE switches on the captain's and first officer's main instrument panel to NORM position (captain's on No. 1 INS and first officer's on No. 2 INS).

 (5)  
Provide electrical power. Refer to 24-22-00.

 (6)  
Check for proper operation of pilots' panel illumination, indicator lamps and annunciator lights using master test and dim control. Refer to 33-11-00.

 (7)  
Ensure inertial navigation systems No. 1, 2 and 3 have battery, control/display and mode selector units properly installed.

 (8)  
Provide cooling air to INS equipment. Refer to 21-58-00.


 CAUTION: ENSURE THAT COOLING AIR IS AVAILABLE TO NAVIGATION UNITS
_______ BEFORE OPERATING INS. FAILURE TO PROVIDE ADEQUATE AIR SUPPLY WILL RESULT IN FAILURE OF NAVIGATION UNITS.
 (9)  Test INS cooling fan operation.
 (a)  
Open both PWR-INS 1, both PWR-INS 2 and both PWR-INS 3 circuit breakers.

 (b)  
Close and then open pair of PWR-INS 1 circuit breakers. Listen for pitch of INS No. 1 fan to first increase and then decrease as circuit breakers are closed and then opened.

 E.  Test Inertial Navigation System
 (1)  Test Battery Units
 (a)  
Prepare for test as described in paragraph D.

 (b)  
Examine each battery unit for internal damage and electrolyte level (Ref 34-41-04, INS Battery Unit - Inspection/Check).

 (c)  
Test battery unit/navigation unit interface. 1) Open circuit breaker on front panel of each INS battery unit. 2) Set mode selector switch on each MSU (mode selector unit on P5 panel) to STBY position.


 3)  Depress TEST switch on each control/display unit and verify that system is not on by observing that annunciators and digital displays do not illuminate.
 4) Set mode selector switch on each MSU to OFF position. 5) Close circuit breaker on front panel of each INS battery unit.
 6)  Set mode selector switch on each MSU to STBY position. Check that on each control/display unit (CDU) and mode selector unit (MSU): a) Red, amber and green lamps do not illuminate.
 NOTE: Some lights, including the red WARN light and
____ green READY NAV light, may flash briefly at turn-on.
 b) CDU INSERT key is illuminated.
 XA c)  On airplanes with Delco CIVA-25, CIVA-26-2, CIVA-28A, CIVA-28A-2 or 32C INS, numerals 0 1 appear in FROM-TO display.
