 NOTE: INS cannot be turned on unless battery unit is properly

 installed.

 (a)  Set AUTO/MAN/RMT switch on appropriate CDU to MAN.
 EFFECTIVITY

 (b)  
Set CDU display selector switch (DSS) to POS.

 (c)  
Set mode selector switch on appropriate MSU to STBY. Check that: 1) Red, amber, and green lamps do not illuminate. 2) CDU FROM-TO display indicates 0 0.


 (3)  On airplanes with Litton LTN-72RL or LTN-92 INS,
 verify proper INS battery installation.

 NOTE: INS cannot be turned on unless battery unit is properly
____
 installed.

 (4)  
Open circuit breaker on front panel of each INS battery unit.

 (5)  
Place mode selector switch on each MSU to STBY. Verify that INS does not turn on by observing that each CDU display is blank.

 (6)  
Place mode selector switch on each MSU to OFF.

 (7)  
Close circuit breaker on front panel of each INS battery unit.

 (8)  
Place mode selector switch on each MSU to STBY. Verify that display on each CDU illuminates.

 (9)  
Test INS battery under full load conditions.

 (a)  
On electronic circuit breaker panels P7 (or P126), open both PWR-INS circuit breakers for appropriate INS system.

 (b)  
Check that BAT light on CDU illuminates.

 (c)  
Wait 10 seconds. Verify that WARN light on CDU does not come on.

 (d)  
Close both INS power circuit breakers opened in step (a).

 


 CAUTION: IF THE INS IS WITHOUT AC POWER FOR LONGER THAN 30
_______ |10 SECONDS, A WARNING HORN IN THE NOSE WHEEL WELL WILL SOUND.
 E. Restore Airplane to Normal
 (1)  Set each INS mode selector switch to OFF position.
 CAUTION: FAILURE TO MOVE MODE SELECTOR TO OFF WILL CAUSE INS TO
_______ AUTOMATICALLY SWITCH TO BATTERY POWER AND A WARNING HORN IN THE NOSE WHEEL WELL TO ACTUATE WHEN POWER IS REMOVED FROM THE AIRPLANE.
 (2)
Remove electrical power if no longer required (Ref 24-22-00).

 (3)
Remove equipment cooling if no longer required (Ref 21-58-00).

 INS BATTERY UNIT - INSPECTION/CHECK

 1. General
_______
 A. Each battery unit must receive periodic examination for internal damage.
 2.  INS Battery Unit Inspection___________________________
 A. Equipment and Materials
 (1)  Clean glass tube (about 6 inches long, approximately 1/8-inch inside diameter and open at both ends)
 B. Examine INS Battery Unit
 (1) With the battery unit mounted in place, open the hinged cover.
 WARNING: KEEP METAL TOOLS, RINGS, WATCH BANDS, ID BRACELETS, NECK
_______ CHAINS, AND OTHER OBJECTS AWAY FROM EXPOSED TERMINALS OR DAMAGE AND/OR INJURY COULD OCCUR TO EQUIPMENT AND/OR PERSONNEL.
 (2)  Examine each individual cell for excessive corrosion, discolored hardware, fluid leakage and connector/wiring integrity.
 WARNING: CONTACT WITH THE CAUSTIC ELECTROLYTE USED IN NICKEL
_______ CADMIUM BATTERIES WILL CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONNEL. IF ELECTROLYTE GETS ON SKIN, FLUSH AFFECTED AREA WITH LARGE QUANTITIES OF WATER.
 (3)  Check each cell for any cell deformities.
 NOTE Under normal usage, the sides of the cell will bow.

 (4)  
If any of the conditions of (2) or (3) are evident, remove and replace the entire battery unit.

 (5)  
Remove cell filler cap plug from one of the cells.

 (6)  
Insert a glass tube into the filler opening deep enough to touch the top of the plates. Grasp the tube between the thumb and middle finger, placing the index finger over the top open end and remove the tube from the filler well. The electrolyte level is determined from the liquid level in the tube. After observing the level, allow the electrolyte to drain back into the cell.

 CAUTION:_______CLEANLINESS IS ESSENTIAL TO GOOD BATTERY PERFORMANCE. BE SURE ALL TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAN AND HAVE NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY USED ON LEAD ACID TYPE BATTERIES. DO NOT ALLOW ANY CONTAMINATION TO ENTER FILLER CAP WHILE OPEN.

 (7)  
Replace filler cap plug.

 (8)  
If the electrolyte level is down to the top of plates (no liquid trapped in the glass tube) remove the entire battery unit from the airplane. Do not add any water.
