 1.  General (Fig. 1)_______
 A.  The speed brake control system is used to raise the spoiler panels to increase drag and reduce lift in flight and during rollout. There are twelve spoiler panels numbered 1 thru 12 from left to right. The ten outboard panels are called flight spoilers and the two inboard panels are called ground spoilers. Spoilers 3 thru 10 are used as speed brakes in flight. All spoilers are used as speed brakes during rollout. All spoilers are hydraulically powered and mechanically controlled.
 B.  The speed brake control system consists of a speed brake control lever, a speed brake lever lock, a speed brake drum mechanism, an automatic speed brake actuator, a speed brake sequence mechanism, a ground spoiler control valve, 2 ground spoiler control packages, and 2 ground spoiler panels. The system also uses the ten flight spoiler panels and drive components of the spoiler control system (Ref 27-61-00).
 C.  Manual control of the speed brake system is from the speed brake control lever on the pilots' control stand. The speed brake lever lock restricts the travel range of the lever during flight. Movement of the control lever rotates a quadrant on the speed brake drum mechanism. This quadrant is connected by cables to the speed brake sequence mechanism in the right gear wheel well. Movement of the sequence mechanism changes the position of the ground spoiler control valve, and provides inputs to the spoiler differential mechanisms which control the flight spoilers.
 D.  The spoiler differential mechanisms add the inputs from the speed brake sequence mechanism to the inputs from the lateral control system to extend the flight spoilers. The ground spoiler control valve ports hydraulic pressure to the ground spoiler control packages to extend the ground spoilers. The ground spoilers are not used for lateral control.
 E.  The spoilers can be automatically extended at touchdown and are automatically extended on a refused takeoff. If a go-around is initiated after touchdown, the spoilers are automatically retracted.
 2.  Speed Brake Control Lever (Fig. 2)_________________________
 A.  The speed brake control lever is located on the left side of the pilots' control stand. The lever is connected to the speed brake drum mechanism through a mechanical linkage. The lever is held by a spring in the DN (down) position when it is all the way forward. The lever may be lifted and moved aft slightly to the ARM position to place it at the start of the flight range. Then the lever may be moved aft from ARM to the FLIGHT DETENT position to raise the spoilers during flight. After touchdown, the speed brake lever lock is released, the lever may be moved past FLIGHT DETENT toward the UP position. At UP, all spoiler panels fully extend.
