 AUTOMATIC DIRECTION FINDER SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST

 1.  General
_______
 A.  This subject has three tasks. The first task is a ground test that you run from the CDU. The second task is an operational test that you run using the front panel BITE of the ADF receiver. The final task is a system test that makes sure that the units in the automatic direction finder (ADF) system operate properly and the ADF system operates with its interfaces.
 B.  Some of the procedures need radio reception from local AM commercial broadcast stations or ADF beacon transmitting stations.
 NOTE: ADF bearing checks on the ground, in hangers, or near
____ other airplanes, metal buildings and equipment, etc., may show innacurate bearings or weak signal.
 C.  The left ADF system drives the narrow bearing pointer and the right ADF system drives the wide bearing pointer on the pilots' navigation displays (NDs), and on the radio magnetic indicators (RMIs) (if installed).
 D.  Normally, a CDU input to the the left or right flight management computer (FMC) tunes the L and R ADF receivers. If the FMCs do not operate or fail, the L or R CDUs alone can tune the ADF receivers.

 2.  ADF System - Ground Test

 A.  General
 (1)  
The Ground Test examines the Left and Right ADF receivers. The selection of ADF L or ADF R on the Ground Tests menu page on the CDU will initiate the Ground Test. The Ground Test is the same as the Self-Test that can be done from the ADF receiver.

 (2)  
In the air, CMC Ground Tests are inhibited by the air/ground relay input.

 (3)  
At the end of the Ground Test, the test results will be shown on the GROUND TEST MENU.

 D. Prepare for the Test

 (1)  
Supply electrical power (AMM 24-22-00/201).

 (2)  
Tune the ADF-L (ADF-R) receiver to an ADF frequency that is
 different from all stations near the airplane.

Prepare the CDU for the test:

 (a)  
Push the MENU key on the CDU to show the MENU.

 (b)  
Push the line select key (LSK) that is adjacent to <CMC to show the CMC MENU.

 (c)  
If <RETURN shows after you push the LSK, push the LSK that is adjacent to <RETURN until you see the CMC MENU.

 (d)  
Push the LSK that is adjacent to <GROUND TESTS to show the GROUND TESTS menu.

 (e)  
Push the NEXT PAGE key until you find <34 NAVIGATION RADIOS.

 (f)  
Push the LSK that is adjacent to <34 NAVIGATION RADIOS to show the GROUND TESTS menu for the navigation radios system.

 (g)  
Push the NEXT PAGE key until you find <ADF-L or <ADF-R.

 

 NOTE: If INHIBITED shows above <ADF-L or <ADF-R, the test will

 not operate.

 (h)  If INHIBITED shows above <ADF-L or <ADF-R: 1) Push the LSK that is adjacent to the test prompt 2) Do the steps shown on the CDU 3) Push the LSK that is adjacent to <RETURN to show the ground
 test menu again.
 E. ADF System Ground Test

 (1)  Push the LSK that is adjacent to the applicable prompt (<ADF-L or <ADF-R).
 (a)  When the TEST PRECONDITIONS page shows, make sure each instruction on the page is completed. (Push the NEXT PAGE key to see the subsequent pages.)
