 A.  The FMCS software has the capability of selecting and displaying an appropriate message corresponding to a hindering condition.
 B.  Two types of error messges exist. These are alertings and advisory messages. Alerting messages will have higher priority than the advisory messages, therefore, being displayed before or in place of an advisory message. Another type of message which exists are the CDU generated messages.

 C.  Alerting messages (Fig. 36) will be displayed in the scratchpad of both CDUs regardless fo the contents previously displayed. If an alerting message is already in the scratch pads at the time another alerting message is received, the alerting message previously displyed will be stored in a stack type configuration and will be displayed when the scratchpad is cleared.
 D.  Advisory messages (Fig. 37) are of two types: data entry error advisory messages and basic advisory messages. The data entry errors will have priority over the basic advisory messages. All advisory messages will be displayed only on the CDU in which the condition has occurred.
 E.  CDU generated messages (Fig. 38) are the same as the alerting and advisory messages from the FMC. These messages are generated by the CDU while the CDU is the controlling unit. The only message generated by the CDU which is unique to the CDU is the TIMEOUT-RESELECT message.
 12. Operations

 A.  Functional Description
 (1)  
The FMCS can be used to plan the entire lateral and vertical flight plan. This preplanned flight profile will be considered by the FMCS to be the most economically feasible flight plan in terms of cost economy.

 (2)  
The FMCS will compute the lateral flight plan corresponding to the selected company route through use of data from the navigational data base. The lateral flight plan may be changed accordingly by manual entry through the CDU by crew while maintaining the efficiency.

 (3)  
The vertical flight plan is computed automatically by the FMC through the use of the performance data base (PDB) and speed, thrust and altitude targets either given by the PDB or entered manually by the pilot. The pilot also enteres a cost index number. This number relates time to fuel economy. The pilot can change this number accordingly in order to manipulate the flight plan.

 (4)  
The FMC also controls the thrust management function. This function, in conjunction with the automatic flight control system, automatically controls the airplanes' vertical maneuvers from takeoff to touchdown.

 (5)  
In addition to flight planning and thrust management, the FMCS calculates the estimated time of arrivial (ETA) and fuel remaining at enroute waypoints.


 B.  Control
 (1)  FMC flight preparation.
 (a)  
Provide external electrical power and energize the P6 Main Power Distribution Panel and the P7 Overhead Circuit Breaker Panel.

 (b)  
Ensure that the equipment cooling system is functioning correctly.
