The software is loaded from a 3 1/2 inch floppy diskette. For some systems it is necessary for more than one diskette for software loading.

In addition to the software input, also the ADL is able to record (download) the data from the CMC or the ACMS as identified by the configuration file on the diskette that is in the ADL.

A software input can only be done while the airplane is on the ground. A software download can be done while the airplane is on the ground or airborne.

When power is supplied, the ADL will do a self-test. The self-test will automatically test the correct operation of the internal hardware and software. If the self-test fails, the ADL FAIL indicator will come on.

After the data loader has been energized, the data loader display will show "INSERT DISK #1" until a diskette is put into the disk drive. When a diskette is put into the disk drive, the data loader will try to communicate with the applicable LRU. When the data loader has tried four times to communicate with the applicable LRU, the data loader display will show "TRANSFER FAIL". Remove and put the diskette back into the disk drive to start the communications between the data loader and the applicable LRU.

Data movement between the applicable LRU and the ADL is on two ARINC 429 data busses. The data movement is in one direction on one bus and in the other direction on the other bus. This lets the tranmission of the data be from the applicable LRU or the ADL. The two ways to move data are automatic and control and they are for data loads and data records.

When in the automatic operation, the whole files are moved without any additional commands. Automatic data movement starts when the ADL sends a "REQUEST TO SEND" word followed by a "CLEAR TO SEND" word from the applicable LRU.

The automatic download starts with a "Request to Send" word from the ADL and the applicable LRU a "Header" word that asks for an automatic download. This automatic download can also be asked for during other operations.

While in control operation, the applicable LRU tells the ADL to do specified disk and data movement operations. This operation starts with a "Request to Send" word from the ADL. The applicable LRU responds with a "Header" word which contains the applicable control commands.

The condition of the data while it moves or the condition of ADL internal software or hardware is shown by the messages shown on the ADL display. The messages and a paragraph that tells about the messages are as follows:
