OIL INDICATING - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

R **ON A/C 001-003, 051-099, 401-499,
 1. General
_______ The oil indicating system shows you if the oil quantity in the integral oil reservoir in the accessory drive gearbox is sufficient or if an oil servicing is necessary. The ECB 59KD monitors the oil quantity through the low oil level switch in the static condition (when the APU does not operate). The set minimum agrees with the ADD mark on the oil sight glass on the gravity oil fill-port. When the ECB 59KD receives a low-oil quantity signal from the low oil level switch, it transmits the signal to:
 -
the Electronic Instrument System (EIS) (Ref. 31-60-00),

 -
the Central Fault Display System (CFDS) (Ref. 31-32-00).
You can read the oil quantity information on the EIS and the Multipurpose
Control & Display Units (MCDUs) in the cockpit on:

 -
the APU page on the lower ECAM display unit,

 -
the APU DATA/OIL page on the MCDU.

 A. Oil Indication System
 (1) The primary component of the oil indicating system is the oil level switch. It is installed above the generator oil filter. The switch-unit has two (normally closed) redundant switches connected in parallel. The switches are set to operate at a small difference in oil level. A float-mounted magnet operates the switches to supply discrete signals to the ECB (when one or the other or both switches are open). The sensor transmits the low oil-quantity signal to the ECB, if the oil quantity is at or below the set minimum of oil level.

_________
The Oil Indicating system has interface with:

 -
the APU Control and Monitoring System (Ref. 49-61-00),

 -
the Storage and Distribution System (Ref. 49-91-00).

 5. Operation/Control and Indication
________________________________ (Ref. Fig. 002) The oil level switch is energized from the ECB. One or both of the switches in the oil level switch opens if the oil level is too low. When the ECB receives the low oil level signal it transfers the signal to the EIS. Then the APU system page of the lower ECAM display unit shows the advisory 'LOW OIL LEVEL'. When you enter the CFDS, the MCDU shows on the APU DATA/OIL page the status of the oil level. The following schedule shows the amount of oil in the gearbox at the
 -FULL-,
 -ADD-,

Low Oil Quantity (LOQ)-,

 -
Low Oil Pressure (LOP)-,

 condition of the APU:
 FULL ............ 6.10 l (1.61 USgal)

 ADD ............. 4.15 l (1.09 USgal)

 LOQ ............. 3.85 l (1.02 USgal)*

LOP ............. 3.20 l (0.85 USgal)* * These values are determined for A/C ground condition. The values can vary in relation of the different operating attitudes of the A/C in flight.
