 FUEL QUANTITY INDICATING SYSTEM - TROUBLE SHOOTING

 1.  General (Fig. 101)

 A.  These trouble shooting procedures were developed from data from a standard system operational test. The procedures are in a tree-type configuration. The steps related to the refuel operation (heavy-line boxes) are connected by arrows to show the path through the tests that gives good (system operable) results (OK condition).
 B.  When a step in an operational test does not give a good result, follow the NOT OK line to the box that contains the applicable problem. Refer to the procedure shown in that box. Continue to analyze the results of each step in trouble shooting until you find the applicable solution to the problem. Do the steps necessary to correct the problem. Then do the step where you first found the problem again to make sure you corrected the problem.
 C.  You can use the error codes kept in the indicator to help you do the trouble shooting. Look at the error codes on the indicators before you do maintenance tasks. Push the indicator test switch to show the error codes on the display. Refer to this table for the causes of these error codes.
 NOTE: Incorrect error codes can be shown if a component of the fuel

 quantity indicating system is disconnected.

 *[1]  If you set the P15 test gage switch to the TEST GAGES position, this makes an entry of error code 3 into the fuel quantity indicators. If the fuel quantity indicator has an error code of 1, 3, 4, 5, or 7 in its memory, and if the indicator shows a value that is not a zero or a blank, the indicator shows the correct fuel quantity value with a tolerance of +/- 3%.
 *[2]  If you push the FUEL QTY TEST switch on the P1-3 panel in the flight compartment, this makes an entry of error code 4 into the fuel quantity indicators.
 D.  Try these easier procedures to find problems with the fuel quantity indicating sytem before you do the longer trouble shooting procedure:
 NOTE: This will keep the time necessary to do the trouble shooting
____ to a minimum. Use the longer trouble shooting procedure only if these steps do not find the problem.
 (1)  
Replace the applicable indicator in the flight compartment with the refuel indicator (the indicator on the P15 panel on the wing) for that same tank. Replace the refuel indicator with the indicator for that same tank from the flight compartment.

 NOTE:____These two indicators have the same part number. They do not usually become bad at the same time.

 (2)  
Make sure the task "Fuel System Drainage" (Sumping) was done a short time before (a minimum of 45 minutes after the airplane movement stops rest or after the refuel operation is completed). This procedure is necessary to drain water collected in the tank. If the conditions of operation are very bad it is recommended that 5 gallons (19 liters) be drained from each tank for each 24 hours. (For example, this is a good procedure if the weather is very hot and humid.)

 (3)  
Examine the bussing plug seals on the wing spar for indications of leakage of fuel or water. This can cause electrical leakage paths between the connector pins. If you think the bussing plug has a problem, replace the bussing plug with a good bussing plug. This procedure will make sure that the bussing plug was the cause of the problem.
