Connect the multimeter to the center conductor at each end of the sensing element.


 (a)  Make sure the resistance of the center conductor is a maximum of 0.2 ohm per foot of element length at any temperature below 120°F ambient.
 NOTE: To calculate the element length in inches, subtract
____ 35500 from the first five digits of the vendor part number.

 (3)  Connect the multimeter across the center conductor and outer shell at one element end fitting.
 (a)  Make sure the minimum insulation resistance is 50 megohms at any temperature below 120°F ambient.

 (4)  Connect the electrical connectors, D840 and D842, to the sensing element on the ceiling of main wheel well.
 (a)  Attach the connectors to the sensing element with lockwires.

 E. Put the Airplane Back to Its Usual Condition

Remove the wire end fittings from the electrical connectors, D840 and D842.

 (2)  
Connect the electrical connectors, D840 and D842, to the sensing element on the ceiling of the main wheel well.


 (a)  Attach the electrical connectors to the sensing element with lockwires.

 B. Procedure

 (1)  Examine the sensing element.
 (a)  
Make sure there are no bends in the detector elements that are less than the minimum bend radius of 1 inch.

 (b)  
Make sure there are no bends in the detector elements that are closer than 1 inch to the clamp and flange assemblies.

 (c)  
Examine the detector elements for worn areas and cuts.

 NOTE:____Permit lightly worn areas on the finish. Reject detectors with badly worn areas or cuts.

 (d)  
Make sure that there are no radial marks on the end face of the electrical connectors that are: 1) more than 0.005 inch deep 2) more than half-way across the face.

 (e)  
Make sure that there is no unwanted material on the seal face of the end connectors.

 WING AND LOWER AFT BODY OVERHEAT DETECTION SYSTEM -
___________________________________________________ DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General_______
 A.  The wing and lower aft body overheat detection system provides overheat detection for the wings and lower aft body. The detection system is an electrical, heat sensing system that responds to overheat by activating warning lights.
 B.  AIRPLANES WITH BOEING M237 COMPARTMENT OVERHEAT ACCESSORY UNIT;
 Refer to the data that follows:

 (1)  
The wing and lower aft body overheat detection system consists of an overheat test switch and overheat lights on air conditioning module P5-10, compartment overheat accessory unit, master caution lights, and sensing elements. The sensing elements are connected to the compartment overheat accessory unit. The accessory unit contains left and right temperature control units and test circuits. The temperature control units monitor the resistance of the sensing elements. When a temperature rise causes the resistance to drop to value corresponding to the alarm temperature, the temperature control unit will provide a signal to the applicable warning light and the master caution light control section in the air conditioning module.
