B. The sensing elements are encased in a perforated tube and are supported by asbestos spacer blocks. Each sensing element is filled with a thermistor material, with resistance varying as a function of temperature.
(1) The resistance varies with length. The heating of less than a full length on a sensor will require it to be heated to a higher temperature for the resistance to decrease to the alarm point. This permits the system to integrate the varying temperatures throughout the installation rather than sensing only the highest local temperature. One wire of the sensor is grounded to the outside case of the sensor. The other wire receives power from the detector control unit. The system continuously monitors the resistance between the hot wire and the ground wire.
Engine and APU Fire Detection Accessory Unit M279
_________________________________________________
A. The engine and APU fire detection accessory unit M279 is on electronic equipment rack E3. Components of M279 applicable to APU fire detection are the APU fire detection card and the accessory control card.
B. APU Fire Detection Card
(1) The detection loop has a corresponding detection control card. The card constantly monitors and processes signals produced by the loop. The card sends alarm or fault signals to the accessory control card.
C. Signal Condition Control Card
(1) The signal condition control card interprets detection card signals and sends fire warning and fault indication signals, and APU automatic shutdown signal.
Alarm Bell
__________
A. The alarm bell warns of fire or overheat in the APU with a steady ringing. The bell is controlled by the signal condition control card of the engine and APU fire detection accessory unit. The alarm bell is in the aural warning devices box.
Remote Horn
___________
A. The remote horn warns of fire or overheat in the APU. The remote horn is in the right main wheel well adjacent to the APU ground control panel. The horn is turned on and off by the signal condition control card of the engine and APU fire detection accessory unit. The horn will operate only when the airplane is on the ground.
Master Fire Warning Lights
__________________________
A. The master fire warning lights are on lightshield module P7. When a fire condition occurs, the fire warning lights illuminate.
B. The master fire warning lights are controlled by the signal condition control card of the engine and APU fire detection accessory unit. Either light may be pressed for bell or remote horn cutout and extinguishing the lights.
