N. GPWS TERRAIN Function (EGPWS)
(1) EGPWS Terrain function The EGPWS (ENHANCED GROUND PROXIMITY WARNING SYSTEM) is built over the current GPWS. It includes a world wide terrain data base which allows to display the terrain hazards, in the selected range, on the ND and to generate warnings or caution when the predicted flight path of the A/C becomes unsafe with respect to the terrain. This function called "terrain awareness alerting and display" or "GPWS terrain function" is added to the GPWS functions.

The terrain image is displayed when an EGPWS T/R unit is operating and there is some information to display, and provided that the ND is not in the PLAN mode. The EGPWS T/R unit is considered as operating when there is information on ARINC 453 bus. A terrain picture may have elements of various colours: green, yellow, red, magenta, blue(cyan), amber. The EGPWS T/R units generate 3 colour bits to provide visual display of terrain.
1 Red warning area
_ The terrain areas associated with the warning criteria are displayed in solid red colour on the ND in mode: ARC, ROSE-NAV, ROSE-VOR or ROSE-ILS
2 Yellow caution area
_ The terrain areas associated with the caution criteria are displayed in solid yellow colour on the ND in mode: ARC, ROSE-NAV, ROSE-VOR or ROSE-ILS

_ When terrain data is available and sufficiently close to the A/C altitude they are displayed in background colour dot patterns. Different dot density patternss and colours are used to represent terrain altitude. Areas with no terrain data available are painted with light density magenta. Known terrain sufficiently below the A/C altitude is not painted (black). Background terrain areas are shown on ND when ARC, ROSE-NAV, or ROSE-VOR, or ROSE-ILS mode is selected.
NOTE : The different colours are encoded by the EGPWS and sent
____ to the DMC in such a way that all the colour change logics, altitude thresholds linked to the terrain image are computed by the EGPWS only, similarly to the WXR display.

(b) EGPWS messages on the ND TERR message The message "TERR" or "TERR AHEAD" is displayed on the ND in lieue of the tilt angle value related to the weather radar (right lower corner) as soon as a terrain frame is detected as valid by the DMC in the ROSE-NAV mode, ROSE-VOR, ROSE-ILS, or ARC mode. Both messages TILT and TERR or TERR AHEAD cannot overlay because the terrain frames and the WXR frames cannot be received at the same time by the DMC. The message "TERR AHEAD" is displayed in red colour when some warning criteria is met. It is flashing for 9 seconds, then remains steady and red until the warning condition disappears. The message "TERR AHEAD" is displayed in amber colour when caution criteria are met. It is flashing for 9 seconds, then remains steady and amber until the the caution condition disappears. The message "TERR" is displayed in cyan colour otherwise.
