The pilot's task is to maneuver the aircraft promptly to keep the needle out of the red sector and place it in the adjacent green "Fly-to" sector. The vertical speed indication is red-colored when the vertical speed is within the forbidden sector whereas it becomes green when the vertical speed enters the authorized sector. The preventive resolution advisories advise the pilot to avoid vertical speeds that could lead to a hazardous situation.

They are represented by one or two red zones on the scale.The pilot must keep the aircraft vertical speed outside these zones. If the aircraft can neither climb nor descend, then two red sectors appear on the vertical speed scale and a range sector (+/- 250 ft ) around the zero figure is left uncolored. This uncolored area around the zero figure informs the pilot to maintain the aircraft at its current level.
