The traffic indications provide a view of the situation in the
surveillance area. The aircraft present in this area are represented
by symbols and associated tags. The position of the symbols on the
display enables to determine the distance (range) and the bearing in
the airspace. Both color and shape of the symbols are used to
discriminate traffic according to the level of threat. The tags
indicate relative altitude and vertical trend.
The various symbols used according to the type of intruder are
presented below:
(Ref. Fig. 051)
-Other traffic for intruders with a range greater than 6NM or a vertical distance of at least +/- 1200 ft.
-Proximate Traffic for intruders which do not enter in the Traffic Advisory (TA) or Resolution Advisory (RA) categories. Their range is within 6NM. Proximate traffic intruders and other traffic intuders can be displayed :

-permanently if the FULL TIME DISPLAY function is selected on the ATC/TCAS control unit. or
- only when a RA or TA type intruder is detected
-Resolution Advisory (RA) .corrective : the pilot must modify present vertical speed .preventive : the pilot must avoid certain vertical speed ranges. Trajectory correction or holding visual orders are accompanied by synthesized voice announcements generated by the TCAS computer.
-Traffic Advisory (TA) for intruders near the aircraft, which do not represent an immediate threat but may become a collision threat. Off scale intruders are represented by a half-symbol displayed at the edge of the ND mask (Ref. Fig. 052)
NOTE : The lower section of this mask can show different
____ configurations to display FM or TCAS messages.
A white range ring is displayed around the aircraft symbol at 2.5 NM
(Ref. Fig. 053)
Only the eight most dangerous intruders can be displayed.
(2) TCAS test A test can be initiated to check the TCAS computer. During this test the ND shows a specific image on which four intruders are displayed :

GPS (Global Positionning System) is considered as "primary" when its A/C position is delivered with appropriate accuracy and integrity. In such a case, a cross-check with other means of navigation is no longer required and GPS position is then used for autopilot operation and display. For the GPS primary function, the ND displays the GPS approaches when appropriate and the status GPS PRIMARY or not.
