NAVIGATION DISPLAY (ND) - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
___________________________________________________
1. General
_______
The Navigation Display (ND) is normally presented in front of each pilot, on the inner display unit. It provides medium term flight information necessary to locate the aircraft with respect to navigation aids, map data and Flight Management System flight plans.
2. Component location

A. Color Choice Seven different colors are used for EFIS system, plus two particular colors for sky and earth (blue and brown). An exhaustive list of all the ND indications with their color assignment is given in the following pages. The general rules for color choice below are followed:
-red : used for the flight envelope limit indications, and for the failure indications concerning the various sensors.
-amber : used for information or messages requiring attention but not quick action or decision.
-yellow : used for aircraft references (e.g.: aircraft symbol, lubber line...)
-white :
used for scales, for VOR indications.
-green : used for current values (e.g.: ground speed, track). cyan : used for selectable values (e.g.: selectable speed, armed mode, tuned navaids), and units (e.g.: NM).
-magenta :
used for ILS. (LOC and GLIDE SLOPE) deviations, and optional
information displayed on the map: VOR-D, NDB, ARPT,...
(1) List of elements per color
(a) Red :
-flags
-NAV receiver unserviceable (VOR, ADF2,...)
-WXR: precipitation 12-50 mm/hr. failure messages corresponding to the loss of WXR image.
(b) Amber :
-caution messages (e.g. CHECK HDG) or message requiring crew attention
-constraint (altitude, speed,...) on the active flight plan, and which cannot be satisfied (because the A/C is too high, or too low...)
-WXR failure messages with WXR image not removed.
(c) Yellow :
-fixed reference symbols (A/C position, A/C heading reference)
-Temporary flight plan, OFFSET or EOSID when not active : way points and legs (in dotted line except for EOSID in continuous line)
-WXR: precipitation 4 to 12 mm/hr

(d) Magenta :
-LOC and glide deviation
