do this coarse adjustment to the control rod [36]:
WARNING: MAKE SURE YOU SET THESE SWITCHES TO THE OFF POSITION
BEFORE YOU DISCONNECT THE CONTROL ROD [36] FROM THE MAIN
RUDDER PCU. THE CONTROL ROD [36] CAN MOVE QUICKLY AND
CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
1) Set the FLT CONTROL A and B switches to OFF.
2) Loosen the two checknuts [35] on the control rod [36].
3) Remove the nut [45], washer [44], washer [43], and bolt assembly [42] to disconnect the
control rod [36] from the center crank [41] of the torque tube.
4) Turn the control rod end for half a turn relative to the sleeve [37]; and turn the sleeve
[37] and the control rod end together for half a turn.
NOTE: The sum of half turn of each is equal to 0.80 in. (20.3 mm) at the rudder trailing
edge.
5) Keep number of threads that you can see in the two parts are approximately same.
6) Install the bolt assembly [42] with the bolt head end up and washer [43] to connect the
control rod [36] to the center crank [41].
7) Tighten the outer bolt of the bolt assembly [42] to 70 in-lb (7.9 Nm) -- 85 in-lb (9.6 Nm).
8) Install the washers [44] and nut [45].
CAUTION: DO NOT TIGHTEN THE OUTER BOLT OF THE BOLT ASSEMBLY [42]
AFTER YOU TIGHTEN THE NUT [45]. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO
EQUIPMENT.
9) Tighten the nut [45] to 25 in-lb (2.8 Nm) -- 30 in-lb (3.4 Nm).
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF ALL
CONTROL SURFACES BEFORE YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
AILERONS, RUDDER, ELEVATORS, FLAPS, SPOILERS, LANDING GEAR,
AND THRUST REVERSERS CAN MOVE QUICKLY WHEN YOU SUPPLY
HYDRAULIC POWER. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND
DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
10) Set the FLT CONTROL B to the ON position.
(b) If the rudder trailing edge is less than 0.50 in. (12.7 mm) from the neutral position, then do
this fine adjustment to the control rod [36]:
1) Loosen the checknuts [35] on the control rod [36].
2) Turn the sleeve [37] until the two sides of the rudder trailing edge are in the width of the
rudder index tab. (Figure 502)
3) Tighten the two checknuts [35].
(c) Make sure you see control rod end threads through the inspection holes on the control rod
[36].
