8) If the difference between the down force and up force is greater than 20 pounds (89
newtons), then do this task: FIM 27-31 TASK 810.
(e) If the right elevator trailing edge stays at the index mark, then do these steps:
1) Hold the captain’s control column in the neutral position.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF ALL
CONTROL SURFACES BEFORE YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
AILERONS, RUDDERS, ELEVATORS, FLAPS, SPOILERS, SLATS, AND

HYDRAULIC POWER. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND
DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
2) Turn on the A and B hydraulic systems to center the elevator, do this task: Elevator
Hydraulic System A and B - Pressurization, TASK 27-31-00-800-801.
3) Do this task: Remove Pressure from the Elevator Hydraulic Systems A and B,
TASK 27-31-00-800-802.
4) Use the force gauge, COM-1557 to measure the force required to move the elevator
trailing edge down 0.75 +/- 0.15 inch (19.1 +/- 3.8 mm) (1.25 +/- 0.24 degrees) from
the index mark (which is referred to as the "down force").
a) Make a record of this down force.
5) Use the force gauge, COM-1557 to measure the force required to move the elevator
trailing edge up 0.75 +/- 0.15 inch (19.1 +/- 3.8 mm) (1.25 +/- 0.24 degrees) from the
index mark (which is referred to as the "up force").
a) Make a record of this up force.
6) If the down force is less than the up force, then do a check of the elevator balance
adjustment (SRM 51-60-04).
7) Calculate the sum of the down force and the up force.
8) Make sure the sum of the down force and the up force is equal or less than 32 pounds
(142 newtons).
9) If the sum of the down force and the up force is greater than 32 pounds (142 newtons),
then, do this task: FIM 27-31 TASK 810.
