SUBTASK 27-31-00-860-048
(4) Use the bar, SPL-1677 to set the "B" dimension at 4 units of trim (39.89 +/- 0.05 inches or 1013.2
+/- 1.3 mm) (Figure 502).
SUBTASK 27-31-00-860-049
(5) Move the control columns in a longitudinal (forward to aft) direction through full travel 20 times.
G. Elevator Surface Friction and Balance Test
SUBTASK 27-31-00-730-001
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT A LOAD OF MORE THAN 65 POUNDS (289 NEWTONS) ON THE
ELEVATORS AT ONE TIME. IF THE LOAD IS TOO HEAVY, IT CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO
THE ELEVATORS.
(1) Do the elevator surface friction and balance test:
(a) Hold the captain’s control columns at the neutral position.
(b) Move the elevator with your hand until the right elevator trailing edge aligns with the
elevator neutral index mark (Figure 505).
1) Release the elevator trailing edge.
(c) If the right elevator trailing edge moves down from the index mark, then do the elevator
balance adjustment (SRM 51-60-04).
(d) If the right elevator trailing edge moves up from the index mark, then do these steps:
WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT PERSONS AND EQUIPMENT ARE CLEAR OF ALL
CONTROL SURFACES BEFORE YOU SUPPLY HYDRAULIC POWER.
AILERONS, RUDDERS, ELEVATORS, FLAPS, SPOILERS, SLATS, AND
THRUST REVERSERS CAN MOVE QUICKLY WHEN YOU SUPPLY
HYDRAULIC POWER. THIS CAN CAUSE INJURY TO PERSONS AND
DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
1) Turn on the A and B hydraulic systems to center the elevator, do this task: Elevator
Hydraulic System A and B - Pressurization, TASK 27-31-00-800-801.
2) Do this task: Remove Pressure from the Elevator Hydraulic Systems A and B,
TASK 27-31-00-800-802.
3) Hold the captain’s control column in the neutral position.
4) Use the block, STD-1278 and force gauge, COM-1557 to measure the minimum force
required to move the elevator trailing edge down 0.75 +/- 0.15 inch (19.1 +/- 3.8 mm)
(1.25 +/- 0.24 degrees) from the neutral index mark (this force is referred to as the
"down force").
