 INSTRUMENT LANDING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General
_______
 A.  The instrument landing system (ILS) is a navigational aid that provides airplane position data for landing approaches. It is designed to receive and process localizer (LOC) and glide slope (G/S) ground station rf transmissions and provide output to interfacing systems for display and navigational use.
 B.  The ILS receiver is a module within the multi mode receiver (MMR).
 C.  The ILS has three independent subsystems designated as the left, right and center ILS. Each subsystem contains an ILS receiver, VOR/LOC antenna input, LOC antenna, G/S capture antenna, G/S track antenna, VOR/LOC antenna switch, G/S antenna coaxial relay, and VOR/LOC rf power divider(s). Equipment location is shown in Fig. 1.
 D.  The ILS receivers are normally tuned automatically by the flight management computers (FMC) or they can be tuned manually using any of the three control display units (CDU). Ground station information of the tuned frequency is provided by the VOR/LOC or LOC antenna, and the G/S capture or G/S track antenna.
 E.  ILS deviation output can be displayed on the captain's and first officer's primary flight displays (PFD), navigation displays (ND), and standby attitude/ILS indicator. ILS caution and status messages are displayed on the engine indicating and crew alerting system (EICAS) displays. ILS audio ground station identification is supplied to the cockpit speakers and pilots' headsets. ILS digital output is supplied to the FMC's, the flight control computers (FCC), the data management unit (DMU), and the ground proximity warning computer.
 2.  ILS Receiver

 A.  Three receivers are used to process LOC and G/S rf signals from the ground stations and provide digital LOC and G/S output data to interfacing systems. They also provide station identification audio to the flight interphone system.
 B.  Each receiver contains a localizer receiver with 40 channels from 108.10 to 111.95 MHz with 50 kHz channel spacing and a glide slope receiver with 40 channels from 329.15 to 335.00 MHz with 150 kHz channel spacing. G/S frequencies are paired with LOC frequencies as shown in Table 1. When the LOC receiver is tuned to a valid frequency, the G/S receiver is automatically tuned to its corresponding frequency.
