WARNING: OBEY ALL OF THE APPLICABLE PRECAUTIONS WHEN YOU CLEAN THE FUEL
_______ TANK WITH STEAM. INJURIES FROM THE STEAM OR DAMAGE TO THE FUEL TANK CAN EASILY OCCUR.
(7)
While you clean with the steam, obey these precautions:
(a)
The person who does the task must have these items for protection: 1) Asbestos gloves 2) A full face mask 3) An asbestos hood or a rubber hood.
(b)
Use a steam line that closes automatically when you release it (a line with a "dead man" valve).

(e)
While you clean, continue to move air through the tank to decrease the steam concentration.
(f)
Keep the time you point the steam at one position to a minimum. 1) Move the steam through an area at approximately 6 inches
per second. 2) Many fast passes are better than one slow pass.
(g)
Do not point the steam at the feathered edge of the seal compound. 1) This loosens the joint. 2) Use a spray of approximately 100 psi at the tank surface. 3) If you put heat on the sealant for a long time, you cause
damage to the sealant.

(8)
Use steam to clean the fuel tank.
(a)
Start at the outboard end of the tank.
(b)
Point the nozzle to the access opening and the drain valve opening.
(c)
Continue to clean in the direction of the drain valve opening and the access opening.
(d)
Hold the nozzle at a distance between 6 and 10 inches from the tank surface.
(e)
Move unwanted material to the inboard end of the tank and out of the openings.
S 217-013
CAUTION: MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE ALL OF THE WASTE PARTICLES CAUSED BY THE
_______ TANK MAINTENANCE. THE UNWANTED MATERIAL CAN CAUSE A BLOCKAGE OF THE EJECTOR PUMPS AND STOP THE WATER SCAVENGE SYSTEM.
(9)
Make sure you removed all the loosened fungus from the fuel tanks.
S 217-014
(10)
Make sure all the limber holes are clear of these unwanted materials (Fig. 701):
(a)
Loosened fungus
(b)
Other material that can cause a blockage when you drain water or fuel.
S 217-015
(11)
For the outboard main tanks, make sure that the drain hole in the midspar web is clear (Fig. 701).
(12)
Remove the remaining unwanted material from the tank.
(13)
Continue to give a good flow of air until the tank is dry.
