D.
Any time the fuel tanks are entered, inspect the tanks for microbial growth.
E.
The Corrosion Prevention Manual, (CPM 20-62-00, Part I) contains a procedure on standard preventive maintenance methods for microbial growth in fuel tanks.
TASK 28-11-00-207-032
2. Detection Check for Contamination With Microbes or Fungus
_________________________________________________________
A. General
(1)
This procedure uses a Microb-Monitor Test Kit to do a check of the fuel for contamination. The kit contains two bottles. One bottle contains liquid to keep the microbes. The other bottle contains an equivalent liquid with a biocide added to it.
(2)
Make sure to sample each fuel tank.
B.
Special Tools and Equipment
(1)
Use one of these microbial growth detection test kits:
NOTE: The test kits are equivalent.

(1)
Get a fuel sample for the contamination detection test:
(a)
Sterilize the fuel sampling equipment and glass bottles for the fuel sampling test with isopropyl alcohol. Dry completely.
(b)
Use the fuel sump drains to get a fuel sample for each fuel tank (AMM 12-11-03/301).
(c)
Make sure the fuel sample contains some water and some fuel.
NOTE: Microbial growth in the fuel tanks occurs at the
____ water-fuel interface.
S 287-027
(2)
Use the Microb-Monitor Test Kit
(a)
Put a fuel sample in the two bottles with a hypodermic syringe.
S 217-028
(3) After 48 hours, examine the fuel samples for a change in color.
NOTE: If the fuel samples change colors, the fuel sample has
____
some contamination.

3. Fuel Tank Check for Contamination With Microbes or Fungus
_________________________________________________________
A. General
(1)
If the fuel sample for a fuel tank is positive (potential microbial growth), then you must go into the tanks to verify the presence of microbial growth. If you find microbial growth, schedule a task to remove the contamination as soon as possible. If you wait too long to remove the contamination, you expose the tank structure and components to a higher probability of corrosion.
