3. Engine Gas Path Cleaning
________________________
A. General
(1)
This task contains two procedures to wash an engine gas path; a detergent wash and a water rinse.
(a)
If you wash an engine gas path with the detergent wash, you must also wash the engine with the water rinse.
(b)
For EGT recovery, it is recommended to perform the engine water rinse with pure water only. An detergent engine gas path is not recommended for EGT margin recovery. Engine washing with cleaning agent is recommended only when organic debris or oil deposits are present.
(2)
Make sure you use water with no more than 100 ppm total solids, 25 ppm sodium plus potasium (Na + K), and with a PH of 6.0-8.0.
(a) Potable water is usually sufficient.
(3)
A water flow of 5-6 gpm (19-23 liters per minute) is necessary at a temperature of more than 40°F (5°C).
(a) For the best results, increase the temperature of the water to 150-200°F (65-95°C).

(b) Hot water at 150-200°F (65-95°C) will wash and clean the gas path the best.
(4) An antifreeze solution must be used when you wash or rinse an engine if the air temperature is below 40°F (5°C). Prepare the antifreeze solution as follows:
CAUTION: METHANOL CAN CAUSE CORROSION IN THE TITANIUM ENGINE PARTS.
_______ YOU MUST USE ONLY ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL IN THE ANTIFREEZE MIXTURE. DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
(a) For temperature between 23-40°F (-5 to 5°C), mix a solution of ú 25 percent isopropyl alcohol with 75 percent water. ú ú NOTE: Methanol
____Do not use methanol in the antifreeze mixture. ú can cause corrosion of the titanium engine parts. You ú must use only isopropyl alcohol in the antifreeze ú mixture. ú
(b) For temperature between 14-23°F (-10 to -5°C), mix a solution of 35 percent isopropyl alcohol with 65 percent water.
NOTE: Do not wash an engine at temperatures below
