Volcanic Ash, Dust Or Sand Ingestion Inspection

 3) Ash, dust or sand particles that have solidified on the HPT
 nozzle vanes and HPT blades.
 a) If material has solidified on the HPT nozzle vanes or
 HPT blades, contact CFMI for instructions and
 recommended action.

 (2)  Do the steps that follow for engines that have been exposed to
 ú  volcanic ash, severe dust or severe sand but have not flown through___
 ú  or operated in these conditions:
 CAUTION: DO NOT WATER WASH AN ENGINE THAT HAS BEEN EXPOSED TO_______
 VOLCANIC ASH, DUST OR SAND. PARTICLES CAN ACCUMULATE IN
 THE HPT NOZZLE AND BLADE COOLING PATHS. MATERIAL MAY
 ACCUMULATE IN ROTOR SPOOLS AND CAUSE ROTOR IMBALANCE.
 (a) Do an inspection of the engine inlet and exhaust for
 accumulation of ash, dust or sand.
 1) Use a vacuum to remove ash, dust or sand from accessible
 areas in the engine inlet and exhaust.
 2) Dry motor the engine for two minutes (AMM 71-00-00/201).
 3) Do a borescope inspection of the HPC and HPT at the 6
 o'clock position (AMM 72-00-00/601). Look for ash, dust or
 sand.
 4) If loose material is still present in the engine flow path,
 dry motor the engine again for two minutes
 (AMM 71-00-00/201).
 5) Repeat the borescope inspection and dry motor procedures
 until all the ash, dust or sand has been removed.

 (3)  Replace the items that follow:
 (a) Replace the scavenge oil filter (AMM 79-21-04/401).
 (b) Drain and replace the oil (AMM 12-13-11/301).

 (4)  Monitor the operation of the engine to find if the performance
 parameters are unusual.
 NOTE: It is recommended to do a one-time repeat borescope____
 inspection of the HPT nozzle and HPT blades at the A-check or
 after 400-800 cycles.
 (a) If the parameters are unusual, refer to the troubleshooting
 procedures.

 WARNING: THE HANDCRANK COVER MUST BE INSTALLED ON THE N2 ROTATION PAD ON
_______ THE ACCESSORY GEARBOX. IF THE COVER IS NOT CORRECTLY INSTALLED OR IS MISSING, ENGINE OIL LEAKAGE CAN OCCUR WHICH CAN CAUSE ENGINE FAILURE. INJURY TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
 (1)  If you turned the N2 rotor, install the handcrank cover on the accessory gearbox (AMM 72-00-00/201).

 WARNING: OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS IN THE PROCEDURE TO CLOSE THE THRUST
_______ REVERSER. IF YOU DO NOT OBEY THE INSTRUCTIONS, INJURY TO PERSONS OR DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT CAN OCCUR.
 (2)  
If not done already, close the right and left thrust reversers (AMM 78-31-00/201).

If not done already, close the right and left fan cowl panels (AMM 71-11-02/201).

Do the activation procedure for the thrust reverser
 (AMM 78-31-00/201).
