(b) Clean the exhaust duct muffler in the alkaline solution: 1) Apply heat to the alkaline solution until the temperature is 175°F (79°C). 2) Put the exhaust duct muffler fully into the alkaline solution for 5 minutes.
3) Mix the alkaline solution to fully clean the internal areas of the exhaust duct muffler. a) Use the brush to clean the surfaces of the exhaust duct
muffler. 4) Remove the exhaust duct muffler from the alkaline solution.
(c) Clean the exhaust duct muffler in the detergent solution: 1) Apply heat to the detergent solution until the temperature is 175°F (79°C). 2) Put the exhaust duct muffler fully into the detergent solution.
3) Mix the detergent solution to fully clean the internal areas of the exhaust duct muffler. a) Use the brush to clean the surfaces of the exhaust duct
muffler. 4) Remove the exhaust duct muffler from the detergent solution.

(3) Flush the exhaust duct muffler:
(a)
Remove the detergent solution from the exhaust duct muffler with water.
(b)
Put the exhaust duct muffler on its aft end so it can drain.

Dry the exhaust duct muffler:
(a)
After the exhaust duct muffler has fully drained, put it in a hot air environment at at 150°F (66°C) for 5 hours.
(b)
Remove the exhaust duct muffler from the hot air environment.
(c)
Let the temperature of the exhaust duct muffler decrease to 65-75°F (18-24°C).
(5)
Install the exhaust duct muffler (AMM 49-81-11/401).

1. Exhaust Duct Heat Shield Removal/Installation

A. General
(1) The heat shield of the exhaust duct is part of the aft fairing assembly. The heat shield is not a line maintenance component. If the heat shield must be replaced, the aft fairing assembly must be removed with the heat shield in AMM 49-81-31/401.

AFT FAIRING ASSEMBLY - REMOVAL/INSTALLATION

1. General
_______
A. The aft fairing is part of the aft fairing assembly. The aft fairing assembly must be removed to remove the aft fairing. The aft fairing assembly includes the aft fairing, exhaust duct heat shield (which is referred to as the 'heat shield') and exhaust duct muffler. If the exhaust duct muffler must be removed with the APU in its position, the aft fairing assembly must initially be removed from the airplane (AMM 49-81-11/401).
B. This procedure gives the tasks to remove and to install the aft fairing assembly. The aft fairing assembly can be removed with the APU in its position. Also, the aft fairing assembly can be removed with the APU removed.
