MAIN ENTRY DOORS - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
____________________________________________
1. General_______
A. There are two entry doors, one at the forward end of the fuselage and one at the aft end of the left side only. The doors are numbered 1 (forward) and 5 (aft). Doors 2, 3 and 4 are not installed on freighter airplanes and the numbers are reserved. Doors 1 and 5 are outward-opening, plug-type, pressure sealed doors which are hinged at the forward edge and operable from inside or outside the airplane. The entry doors do not have the emergency power system installed.
B. When the main entry doors are closed and latched and the airplane is pressurized, doorstops mounted on the forward and aft doorjambs and upper and lower sills contact adjustable doorstop pins attached to the forward and aft door frames and upper and lower door gates. The doorstops transmit the pressure loads on the door to the surrounding fuselage structure and prevent excessive deflection of the pressure seal attached around the periphery of the door.
C. The main entry doors may be opened or closed in winds up to 40 knots or left latched open in winds up to 65 knots without structural damage, although extra personnel may be required to operate the doors in high winds.
2. Handle Mechanism (Fig. 1)________________
A. The exterior handle is bolted to the outer shaft, which rotates in the inner bearing surface of the basket cam (Detail A). The basket cam, bolted to the handle mechanism housing, programs the flared position of the exterior handle by two slots in outer edge which allow handle to retract flush only in vertical position.
B. The sliding center shaft, which functions to disengage emergency power actuation system and engage inner handle, extends through the outer shaft and is retained by roller bearings mounted on the exterior handle. A thrust collar and linkage clamp are mounted on the sliding center shaft inside the handle mechanism housing and held in place by a bolt. The sliding center shaft, containing spring depressor and spring, slides over inner shaft. The spring functions to keep exterior handle in the inboard position.
C. The inner shaft, which is splined, extends through clutch collar, support fitting, and control cam. The clutch collar, which engages with sliding center shaft when exterior handle is pulled outward, causes interior handle to rotate with exterior handle. The support fitting bolted to handle mechanism housing, provides bearing surface for the control cam. The control cam is splined and bolted to inner shaft. The interior handle is pinned to the stub shaft which is bolted to control cam.
