2) If the center shaft movement is not satisfactory, do these steps to adjust the shim (58): a) Remove the handles and the center shaft to get access
to the shim (58). b) Decrease the laminated shim, if it is necessary. c) Temporarily install the center shaft without the
support fitting. 3) Make sure the clearance between the cam follower bearing (8) and the edge of the basket cam (49) is at least
0.005 inch (Fig. 401, Section A-A).
NOTE: Use washers and shim as required to keep the
____ mounting screws square to the external handle and the cam follower bearing support. Adjust shim and washers to achieve the minimum 0.005 inch gap as shown in Section A-A.
Make sure the screw ends are flush with the cam follower bearing support within +/- 0.02.

If you only removed the handles (9) and center shaft (45), do a test of the handle mechanism to see if the clutch engages correctly (Ref 52-11-13/501).

If you replaced the handle mechanism, adjust the handle mechanism.

Adjust Handle Mechanism (Fig. 402).
NOTE: This adjustment is not necessary if you only removed the external

handles (9) and the center shaft (45) (Fig. 401).

Adjust the housing (21) for the external handle fairing and
flushness.
(a)
Make sure the latch assembly (8) will not cause a blockage to the external handle (3) in the door recess. 1) If it is necessary, temporarily remove the latch keeper (1)
from each handle (Fig. 402).
(b)
Hold the external handles (9, View A, Fig. 401) against the cam (49) and measure the fairing contour of the handles (View A-A, Fig. 402). 1) Make sure the handles are parallel to the door outer
contour by less than | 0.03 inch.
NOTE: It is satisfactory at this point if the handles are
____ parallel to the door outer contour.

If the handles are not parallel, do these steps to adjust the laminated shim (58): 1) Remove the external handles, center shaft (45), and basket
cam (49) to get access to the shims (53 and 58)
2) Remove the laminated shim (58) and adjust the shim thickness to make the handles parallel to the door outer contour.
NOTE: Keep the minimum shim thickness.

3) Install the external handles (9), center shaft (45), and
basket cam (49) in the housing (21) (Ref Par. F.(2).).Fully extend the external handles (9). 1) Make sure the outboard end of the center shaft (45) moves a
minimum distance of 0.55 inch.
NOTE: Measure this distance while you move the handles
____ from its position to the fully extended position.
