Latching Mechanism (Fig. 1)
__________________
 A.  The door latching mechanism consists of four latch pins which project through the four door keeper fittings and engage keeper fittings attached to the door jamb (Detail B, Fig. 1). The latch pins are actuated by a rack and pinion mechanism. The inner edge of each latch pin is in the form of a rack; all four racks engage with a pinion gear on the actuator shaft which connects to the interior handle (Detail C, Fig. 1). The exterior handle shaft, containing a spring, slides within the actuator shaft. The spring functions to move the exterior handle shaft outward to engage the actuator shaft.
Operation (Fig. 1)
_________
 A.  Functional Description
 (1)
The hatch is opened from inside the airplane by rotating the interior handle counterclockwise 180 degrees. Operation of the interior handle rotates the pinion gear on the actuator shaft. As the pinion gear rotates on the racks of the four latch pins, the latch pins move inward, guided by rollers mounted on the handle mechanism housing, disengaging the fuselage keeper fittings. With latch pins disengaged, the door is rotated down and outboard on its hinges.

 (2)
The hatch is opened from outside the airplane by pressing the release trigger which allows the exterior handle to spring out from its recessed position. The outward movement of the exterior handle engages the actuator shaft. As the exterior handle is rotated clockwise 180 degrees, the interior handle rotates counterclockwise and the door functions as when opened from inside the airplane.

 (3)
The hatch is closed from inside the airplane by rotating the hatch upward and inboard until the door keeper fittings contact the door jamb keeper fittings. The interior handle is rotated clockwise 180 degrees. Operation of the interior handle rotates the pinion gear of the actuator shaft. As the pinion gear rotates on the racks of the four latch pins, the latch pins move outward, guided by rollers mounted on the handle mechanism housing, engage the doorjamb keeper fittings, and latch the hatch closed.

 (4)
The hatch is closed from outside the airplane by rotating the hatch upward and inboard until the door keeper fittings contact the doorjamb keeper fittings. The exterior handle is rotated counterclockwise 180 degrees and the latching mechanism operates as when the hatch is closed from inside the airplane. With the hatch latched and the arrow on the exterior handle pointing forward, the exterior handle is pushed toward and latched in its flush position.
