UPPER DECK CREW SERVICE DOOR - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
________________________________________________________
General
_______
 A.  The upper deck door provides direct access to the upper deck. The door is an inward-opening, plug-type, track-mounted door which is operated manually from either inside or outside the airplane. The door opening is approximately 24 inches wide by 48 inches high. An observation window is installed in the upper forward portion of the door. A removable, insulated plastic honeycomb sandwich lining is installed on the interior of the door.
 B.  When the upper deck crew service door is closed and latched and cabin pressurized, adjustable stop pins attached to the forward and aft doorframes contact stop fittings attached on the forward and aft doorjambs. The doorstops transmit the pressure loads on the door to the surrounding structure and prevent excessive deflection of the pressure seal attached around the periphery of the door.
 C.  Due to the height of the upper deck crew service door above the ground, care should be taken when working in the door area when the door is open. To prevent personnel from falling through the door opening, a safety barrier, part number 6PRE65B00040, may be installed in the door opening.
Handle Mechanism (Fig. 1)
________________
 A.  The two exterior handles are pinned to the pivot fitting and two pushrod links. (See detail A.) The inboard flange of the pivot fitting is attached to the handle shaft by means of dowel pins and screws. The handle shaft, which extends through the mechanism housing, control cam, and interior handle bracket, is retained in position axially with a nut which bears against the handle bracket. The interior and exterior handles are spring loaded against the door by a coil spring housed in the handle shaft which resists axial movement of the pushrod connecting the door handles. A seal between pushrod and shaft prevents loss of cabin air. A recessed door handle housing, installed in the door outer structure and attached to the mechanism housing, provides fairing of the exterior handles when in the closed position.
