Tightly push the control cam (18) to hold the spring (11).

 (f)  
Pull the external handles (2, 28) until it touches the bottom against the spring (11). 1) Hold the handles in their positions until you find the shim


 thickness.
 NOTE: The necessary force to keep the spring compressed
____ can be as high as 100 pounds. Use a clamp on the support fitting (17) or install the support fitting bolts, if it is necessary.

 (g)  
Measure and write the clearance between the support fitting (17) and housing (20) while you hold the parts.

 (h)  
Adjust the shim thickness (16) 0.010-0.016 inch more than the clearance measured in the step (f). 1) If there is no clearance, remove the shim (16).

 (i)  
Assemble the support fitting (17) with the clutch collar (15) and the adjusted shim (16) in their positions with the bolts and washers.

 (j)  
Measure the end clearance between the cam followers on the cranks (10, 19) and the bottom of the slot in the control cam (18).


 CAUTION: MAKE ENSURE THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE CAM FOLLOWERS AND
_______ THE CONTROL CAM IS NOT LESS THAN 0.020 INCH. IF THE CLEARANCE IS LESS THAN 0.020 INCH, THE PARTS WILL NOT MOVE FREELY.
 (k)  
Make sure the clearance between the cam followers and the control cam (18) is more than 0.02 inch.

 (l)  
If the clearance is not satisfactory, add or remove the washers below the control cam (18) or the bearing (3) on cranks (10, 19)

 (m)  
Find the total thickness of the shim (16) that you removed or added. 1) Add the removed thickness or minus the added thickness to


 the clutch engagement value that you calculated. 2) The new value must be equal or larger than 0.100 inch.

 (4)  
If the clutch engagement is satisfactory, do these steps to install the support fitting and the control cam:

 (a)  
Remove the support fitting (17), shim (16) and clutch
 collar (15).


 (b)  
Apply grease on the clutch collar (15). 1) Install the collar on the splines of the inner shaft (12).

 (c)  
Apply a layer of the primer to the delamination shim surfaces (16) and install the shim on the housing (20).

 (d)  
Install the bearing of the support fitting (17) on the clutch collar (15). 1) Tightly push the support fitting against the shim on the


 housing and attach with bolts and washers.
 NOTE: You will push against the spring force.
____
 2) Install the lockwire if there are holes on the bolt heads.
 (e)  Install the control cam (18) and attach with washer, nut and cotter pin.
 CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE OFFSET BOLT HOLES ON THE STUB SHAFT ALIGN
_______ WITH THE SHIM (32) AND THE CONTROL CAM (18) BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE FASTENERS. IT CAN CAUSE DAMAGE IF THE HOLES ARE NOT ALIGNED.
 (f)  Align the holes of the stub shaft (31) and shims (32) (if you removed) with the holes in the control cam. 1) Install the fasteners and lockwire.

 (5)  If the clutch engagement is not satisfactory, adjust the shims (22 and 26).
 NOTE: These shims can cause the incorrect fairing of the handles
____ and the door skin. It also can cause the incorrect clearance between the center shaft (30) and the clutch collar (15), (with the handles extended) as well as the clutch engagement.

 (6)  
Fully put the external handles in the closed positions.

 (a)  
Make sure the bearing (3) touches the bottom of the slot in the cam (25) when the handles are in the closed positions.
