FLAP-TYPE MECHANICAL SEALS - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. General
_______
A. This procedure contains two tasks. The first task is the removal of the flap-type mechanical seal. The second task is the installation of the flap-type mechanical seal.
B. The flap-type mechanical seals are installed on all of the main entry doors, the upper deck emergency doors, crew entry doors, all cargo doors and the nose cargo door. The full seal removal and installation is done by this procedure.
NOTE: This repair also applies to the seals around the presure relief
____ doors which are parts of the lower cargo doors and the side cargo door.

Put the door in a position to make the removal of the seal easy.

Hold the lip of the seal and pull and roll the seal to disengage it from the seal retainer.

Continue to pull the seal from the seal retainer along the edges of the door until the seal is removed.

CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE LARGE FILLET RADIUS OF THE SEAL FACES INBOARD.
_______ IF THE LARGE RADIUS DOES NOT FACE INBOARD, THE SEAL WILL NOT HOLD PRESSURE AND THE AIRPLANE WILL NOT PRESSURIZE.

Put the seal into the correct position around the edge of the door.

Make sure the short leg on the bottom is in the direction of the edge of the door.
