FLIGHT COMPARTMENT SIDEWALL LINING AND INSULATION -
_________________________________________________
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_________________________
General
_______
A. The flight compartment sidewalls are insulated and acoustically lined (Fig. 1). Insulated dripshields are installed in most of the sidewall area. Fire and moisture resistant insulation blankets are installed where there are no dripshields. Decorative lining panels cover the sidewalls except in areas where equipment consoles or compartments are attached to the sidewall structure.
B. Flight compartment lining panels, dripshields and insulation blankets are essentially the same for both the sidewalls and ceilings. Refer to 25-14-01/401 Ceiling Dripshields and 25-22-03/401 Upper Deck Ceiling Insulation for similar removal/installation procedures.
Sidewall Lining
_______________
A. Sidewall lining panels are made of honeycomb core with fire-resistant glass fabric on both sides and a decorative lamina on the inboard finished surface. The lamina is scratch-resistant and washable. Equipment and instruments extend through cutouts in the panel.
B. The lining panels are fastened to support brackets by screws around their edges. Around the flight compartment door and windshield fire resistant polyester reinforcing trim is installed and the panel edges are fillet sealed.
Observers' Reveal Lining
________________________
A. The observer's reveal lining is made of fiberglass coated with decorative paint on the inboard finished surface. The fiberglass material is flexible and easily formed to the required contour or bend. The reveal is fastened to the support brackets by screws around its edges.
Sidewall Dripshields
____________________
A. The dripshields are located outboard of the flight compartment sidewall lining. The dripshields are rigid, formed fiberglass panels with insulation blankets cemented by a synthetic rubber adhesive on the outboard side. Dripshields are installed to control condensate flow and insulate the flight compartment. They collect condensate formed on the sidewalls and also receive the condensate that drains from the aft ceiling dripshield. The condensate then flows to the floor level where it collects in sponge plastic dams and is directed toward the airplane drain system.

B. Screws attach the dripshields to sidewall structure. The joints of adjacent dripshields have a 2-inch overlap and are fillet sealed with a synthetic rubber. Mounting brackets are installed at numerous locations on the inboard side of the dripshield to provide attachments for sidewall linings, instrument panels and equipment.
5. Sidewall Insulation
___________________
A. Fiberglass insulation blankets with a moisture impervious covering are installed in the sidewalls outboard of the lining panels where there are no dripshields. The flight compartment forward bulkhead is also insulated. Aside from thermal and acoustical properties, the fiberglass blankets are fire-retardant and moisture-resistant.
B. The blanket sections are shaped to fit between ceiling frames and other structure components. Cap strips fit over the structure members and are held in place by plastic stud retainers.
