CONTAINERIZED CARGO HANDLING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
_______________________________________________________________
1. General
_______
A. The containerized cargo compartments in the lower lobe are equipped with a powered cargo handling system for loading and unloading containerized and palletized cargo. The system provides for movement and control of cargo in both lateral (in and out of airplane) and longitudinal (fore and aft) directions. The system consists of ballmat assemblies, roller channel assemblies, power drive units with associated wiring harnesses and control system components.
CAUTION: LANDING GEAR DOORS SHOULD BE IN CLOSED POSITION DURING LOADING
_______ OPERATIONS TO AVOID POSSIBLE DAMAGE TO DOORS (AMM 32-00-30/201, LANDING GEAR DOOR LOCKS, AMM 32-14-00/501, BODY GEAR DOORS).
WARNING: CARGO COMPARTMENT HEAT TUBES LOCATED BELOW THE FLOOR ARE HOT (325
_______ F/163 C) AND CAN CAUSE BURN INJURIES OR DAMAGE TO CARGO. USE CARE WHEN LOADING CAGRO TO AVOID CONTACT WITH HEAT TUBES.
B. Cargo movement and control is accomplished through the interaction of the following subsystems which constitutes the cargo handling system (Fig. 1, 2).
(1)
The cargo conveyor system consists of ball transfer panels and roller channel assemblies which carry the cargo load and provide a low-friction surface for easy cargo movement within the compartment.
(2)
The power drive system provides the motive force for cargo movement. The force is submitted by power drive units with rubber covered drive rollers which protrude above the cargo supporting structure to contact the underside of the cargo containers and pallets.
