 8.  Control System (Fig. 2)

 A.  In both the forward and aft compartments, a cargo handling control panel is located overhead inside the cargo door. With ground power on, opening the door activates the panel. Each panel mounts a toggle-type power drive system switch, a joystick-type direction selector and a rotary lateral guides switch. The power drive switch is the system on-off control. In the forward compartment this switch also prepares the system for cargo movement either forward or aft of the doorway. The nine-position joystick commands extension and retraction of the PDUs and guide rails in the doorway, and the direction of rotation of the drive rollers. The lateral guides switch provides for normal automatic guide rail operation, or for deactivation of the appropriate guide rails in the retracted position when handling cargo that is wider than standard containers. A caution light on each control panel is used to warn against operating the system with personnel in the cargo area. The light flashes when depressed and must be pressed again to switch it off.
 B.  A power disconnect panel mounted adjacent to each control panel contains two bay cutoff switches. These switches enable the operator to remove power from the power drive units in bays 4 and 5 in the forward compartment and bays 6 and 7 in the aft compartment.
 C.  An Analog-Digital Electronic Control (ADEC) box is mounted under the PDU/component channel assembly just forward of the ballmat area. The control system receives input from the joystick, control box switches, PDUs and lateral guides. Based on proximity sensor input from the PDUs, direction of movement and relative position to the ballmat area, only those PDUs under the active container operate.
