(9)
Examine the axle sleeve saw gaps.
(a)
If there is an overlap of an axle sleeve saw gap, remove and then install the axle sleeve (AMM 32-11-32/401 Wing Gear, AMM 32-13-26/401 Body Gear).
NOTE: It is not necessary to measure the saw gaps on the
____ axle sleeve for a wear dimension. After many landings, the movement of the wheels can cause the saw gaps on the axle sleeve to compress. This condition is permitted, and no correction is necessary.
H. Install the Wheel and Tire Assembly (Fig. 401)
S 424-071
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT FORCE ON THE HEAT SHIELDS OF THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY WHEN
_______ YOU MOVE THE WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY. BENT HEAT SHIELDS FREQUENTLY CANNOT BE REPAIRED. AN INSTALLED BRAKE WITH A BENT HEAT SHIELD WILL CAUSE SCRATCHES ON THE INNER WHEEL WHEN THE WHEEL MOVES.
(1)
Do the steps that follow to install the tire and wheel assembly:
(a)
Make sure that the axle thread protector is installed.
CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY GREASE TO THE AREA BETWEEN THE AXLE BEARINGS.
_______ THE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THIS AREA DURING A LANDING CAN CAUSE ALL GREASE IN THIS AREA TO BURN. THIS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WHEELS, TIRES, AND BRAKES.
(b)
Lubricate the inner diameter surface of the inner and outer wheel bearings on the wheel with grease.
(c)
Apply a thin layer of grease on the axle where the axle will touch the wheel bearings.
(d)
Use a rag to remove the unwanted grease from the axle and the brake.
(e)
Lubricate the grease seals (3, 19) for the inner wheel bearing and the outer wheel bearing.
CAUTION:_______MAKE SURE THE BRAKE ROTORS ARE ALIGNED. DAMAGE TO THE ROTORS CAN OCCUR IF THE DRIVE KEYS ON THE WHEEL HIT THE ROTORS DURING INSTALLATION.
(f)
Align the brake disks if it is necessary.

MAINTENANCE MANUAL
CAUTION:_______ MAKE SURE THAT THE WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE BEEN PROPERLY
CLEANED, INSPECTED, AND LUBRICATED PER THE WHEEL SUPPLIERS
COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL. DAMAGED OR CONTAMINATED
BEARINGS CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE WHEEL AND BRAKE.
CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE CORRECT NUMBER BEARING CONE IS INSTALLED IN
_______ THE APPLICABLE WHEEL HALF. THIS IS ONLY NECESSARY IF CORRECT BEARING PART NUMBERS ARE NOT CONFIRMED AND INSTALLED IN THE SHOP, OR IF THE BEARINGS ARE REMOVED FROM THE WHEEL PRIOR TO THE WHEEL BEING INSTALLED ON THE AXLE. INSTALLATION OF THE INCORRECT BEARING ON A WHEEL HALF CAN CAUSE WHEEL DAMAGE.
(g) Make sure the correct bearing (7) with a serviceable grease seal (19) and retaining ring (18) are installed in the inside half of the wheel and tire assembly.
NOTE: The correct bearing is identified by numbers on
____ the bearing.
1) If it is necessary, install the inner bearing (7), grease seal (19), and retaining ring (18) in the inner half of the wheel and tire assembly.
(h)
Remove the outer bearing (2), grease seal (3), and retaining ring (4) if they are in the outer half of the wheel.
NOTE:____This is an optional step. You can easily install the wheel with the outer bearing, grease seal, and retaining ring in the wheel.
(i)
Put the wheel and tire assembly (1) on the dolly and move the dolly to its correct position to install the assembly.
(j)
Install the outer bearing (2), grease seal (3), and retaining ring (4).
NOTE: This step is only necessary if you did the optional
____ removal of these components before you installed the wheel and tire assembly. You can identify the correct bearing by the numbers on its surface.
