 HYDRAULIC FLUID QUANTITY INDICATING SYSTEM - DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

 1.  General (Fig. 1)_______
 A.  The hydraulic fluid quantity indicating system shows the quantity of fluid in the A and B reservoirs. There are indicators in the control cabin for the pilots and indicators in the main wheel well (on the side of the reservoirs) for the ground crew.
 B.  The standby reservoir has a low quantity switch that makes a warning light come on.
 C.  The indicating systems use 28 volt dc power.
 2.  Fluid Quantity Transmitters and Indicators (Fig. 1)__________________________________________
 A.  There is a transmitter on the side of each hydraulic reservoir. It uses a float to find the fluid level in the reservoir. The float mechanically moves the indicator that is on the transmitter. The float also moves a synchro which gives a signal equal to the fluid level in the reservoir. The indicator in the control cabin gets the signal from the transmitter and shows the fluid level.
 B.  The transmitters for system A and B are calibrated differently because the capacities of the reservoirs are different. The mounting holes for the two transmitters are different.
 3.  Standby Low Quantity Switch___________________________
 A.  The standby low quantity switch is on the top of the standby reservoir. It is a probe type unit that uses a magnet in a float ring to find the fluid level. At a specified level, the magnet operates a reed switch to make the low quantity light on the P5 panel come on.

 1.  General
_______
 A.  Two basic troubles may be encountered in the hydraulic fluid quantity indicating system. They are an incorrect reading or zero reading of the direct reading gage on the system reservoir or the remote quantity indicator located on the first officer's panel. The troubles could be caused by an open circuit (no power), defective indicator, or transmitter out of calibration. When trouble shooting the system, first check for electrical power and then substitute system components with components known to be good until defect is found.
