Pressurize the rudder hydraulic system (AMM 27-21-00/201).

Do a check of the rudder play with no movement of the rudder pedal (Fig. 603):
CAUTION: DO NOT PUT MORE THAN 50 POUNDS (222 NEWTONS) ON THE RUDDER
_______ WHEN YOU MOVE THE RUDDER SURFACE BY EXTERNAL FORCE. YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE RUDDER
(a) Use a block and scale to move the rudder to the left side with a force of 12.0 +/- 4 pounds (53 +/- 17 newtons) and release slowly.
NOTE: Apply the force approximately 6-8 inches (152-203
____ millimeters) from the bottom of the trailing edge and 3 inches (76 millimeters) forward of the trailing edge.
1) Make a record of the rudder position on the dial indicator.

NOTE: Apply the force approximately 6-8 inches (152-203

1) Make a record of the rudder position on the indicator.
(c)
Make sure the difference between the left and right positions is not more than 0.04 inch (1.0 millimeter). 1) If the difference is more than 0.04 inch (1.0 millimeter),
then replace the bearings on the rudder hinge or power control units. ,
(d)
Use a block and scale to move the rudder to the left side with a force of 12.0 +/- 4 pounds (53 +/- 17 newtons) and release slowly.

Remove the indicator from the rudder.

4. Elevator and Elevator Tab Inspection

A. General
(1)
The control surface movement in the specified limits is permitted if the worn areas are equal in all the mechanical parts of the system. If a local area wears more quickly than the other areas in the system, repair that part of the system.
(a)
The limits are provided in Fig. 601.
(2)
Measure the movement with the control surface in the approximate aligned position at the surface inboard trailing edge unless otherwise noted.

Standard Tools and Equipment
(1)
Dial Indicator - Accurate to 0.001 inch
(2)
Spring Force Scale, Push Type - Capable of 15 +/- 0.2 pounds
(3)
Mounting Device (to hold the dial indicator against the elevator tab)
