 The MCDU display contains 14 lines, each having 24 characters. Of these
 14 lines, the top line (line 1) is used as a title line or to display
 data to which the operator does not have access. The bottom line (line
 14) is used as a scratchpad line for entering data into the system.
 Lines 2 through 13 are data lines arranged into six pairs (lines 2-3,
 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11, 12-13). Each pair of lines has a label line and a
 data line. The data lines are adjacent to the line select (LS) keys, and
 the label line is just above the data line.
 The line pairs are referenced by LS keys as shown below and in the
 various menu figures:

R  The LS keys allow entry of data into a field and access to a data or a 
R  function identified by that field.

R  (1) MCDU Keys 
R  The keyboard has the following alphanumeric keys: 
R  Activating an alphanumeric key (0 through 9, A through Z, ., +, -, . 
R  and / ) enters that character into the scratchpad of the MCDU. 
R 
R  Activating the MCDU MENU mode key causes the MCDU menu to be 
R  displayed. The other mode keys are not used for AIDS. 
R 
R  Function keys 
R  'NEXT PAGE' = causes horizontal slewing to occur. 
R  ' ' (Slew up) = causes upward vertical slewing to occur. 
R  ' ' (Slew down) = causes downward vertical slewing to occur. 
R  'CLR' = allows clearing of scratchpad and data 
R  fields. 
R  ' . OVFY' = enters a . into the scratchpad (not used 
R  for AIDS). 
R  There are three illuminable annunciators on the MCDU front panel: 
R  'MCDU MENU' : This annunciator is illuminated (white) when a system 
R  linked to the MCDU requests the display. 
R  'FAIL' : Not used for AIDS 
R  'FMGC' : Not used for AIDS 
R  (2) General Display Rules 
R  Nonvalid and Missing Data 
R  For all display fields, only valid data will be displayed. If the 
R  data are not valid for display or "xxxx" for display, the display 
R  field will contain dashes (---). 
R  When a new page is accessed, or data are entered, it may require the 
R  computer to perform calculations before all the data to be displayed 
R  are available. In these cases, the screen is cleared. Then the 
R  portion of the display that is available and can be displayed is 
R  presented to the operator immediately. However, the data fields that 
R  are not available would be left as dashes and filled in as the data 
R  become available.

R  Small and Large Front Panels 
R  The MCDU has two sizes of front panel. Generally all data on the data 
R  line are displayed on a large front panel. But data on the label line 
R  are displayed on a small front panel. 
R  However, the following are exceptions: 
R  - Data with default values (or computer calculated values) which 
R  could be changed by the operator are displayed on a small front 
R  panel. 
R  - If two data entries are dependent upon each other, the independent 
R  data (those defaulted to or latest input by the operator) are 
R  displayed on a large front panel and the dependent data are on a 
R  small front panel. 
R  - For additional exceptions for AIDS which ensure more clarification 
R  in several menus.

R  (3) MCDU Special Symbols
