The MCDU has two sizes of front panel. Generally all data on the data
line are displayed on a large front panel. But data on the label line
are displayed on a small front panel.
However, the following are exceptions:
-Data with default values (or computer calculated values)
which could be changed by the operator are displayed on a
small front panel.
-If two data entries are dependent upon each other, the
independent data (those defaulted to or latest input by
the operator) are displayed on a large front panel and
the dependent data are on a small front panel.
-For additional exceptions for AIDS which ensure more
clarification in several menus.
(3) MCDU Special Symbols There are special symbols on MCDU displays that indicate certain functions to the operator. Certain symbols show the operator what is available or if there is more information than is already displayed. The following symbols are used in the displays:

< or > If this symbol appears next to an LS key, it indicates that the activating line select key will only cause the MCDU to display a different page (it is the call-up of a page). Its name is displayed beside the symbol.
* If this symbol shows beside an LS key, it indicates that the key causes the activation of a function (it is the call-up of a function). The page displayed may also change as a result. If the DMU or FDIMU needs some time to react, during this time the star shall disappear to indicate that the signal was registrated. As long as the star is not shown, the related function can not be activated.
If an arrow shows beside an LSK, it shows
that the operator can press the key to set
data, without activating a function.
CO DO This indicates that the user can enter data here (optional). Occasionally this data may be computed and entered by the computer as a result of another operator action.
This indicates that the data are necessary for the user to input in order for the computer to perform the specific function.
----- This indicates that the data will be displayed by the computer when it has enough information to do so. The user does not normally enter this information. However, under certain circumstances he may be able to alter the data.
Two vertical arrows (up or down) in columns 23 and 24 of the scratchpad show that vertical slewing is avaiable.
A horizontal arrow in column 24 of the title line show that horizontal slewing is available from this page. Activating the NEXT PAGE key will slew the page horizontally.
