The FDIMU (DMU-part) provides different communication interfaces for
operator dialogue and ground communications. The usage of these
communication channels is mostly programmable. For example, reports
can be either printed out, transmitted to the ground via ACARS or
retrieved by the use of a floppy disk via the PDL. That means each
airline user can setup the FDIMU to support most efficiently the
airline specific-data-link structure.

SAR The data from the SAR data storage buffer is retrievable through the PDL. A remote print button (3TV) is located on the pedestal in the cockpit to initiate manually some specific reports. Also SAR recording is triggered through the print button. The report/SAR channel assignment of the remote print button is GSE programmable.

PCMCIA The integrated PCMCIA interface contains an optional DAR recording function and is able to store SAR generated files and AIDS standard reports. In addition it is possible to emulate a data loader function. When using this functions a PCMCIA card must be inserted in the PCMCIA interface.

The AIDS mainly consists of the Data Management Unit (DMU) and an optional Digital AIDS Recorder (DAR). The DMU is the central part of the AIDS and is reconfigurable via the Application Generation Station (AGS). The DMU is a high-performance avionic computer specialized for the acquisition of ARINC 429 DITS data and associated processing. The multi tasking architecture allows processing of the various tasks in real time. An integral part of the DMU is the optional Smart Access Recorder (SAR), integrated on the additional CPU-2 board. This function is based on a nonvolatile Solid State Mass Memory (SSMM).
