MCDU Vertical Slewing Certain pages in the computer contain more data than will fit on a single page (a page longer than the six pairs of lines available on the display). In these cases, data are arranged on a 'drum'. In these instances vertical slewing can be used to scroll the display up or down. Each press of a vertical slew key scrolls the MCDU display by one line pair, or by one block. A line pair is a line adjacent to an LS key and its label line. Holding the vertical slew key down scrolls the MCDU display at a rate of 2 line pairs per second. The arrows will be displayed in columns 23 and 24 of the scratchpad when vertical slewing is available.

 General Display of a Page

-Only the selectable functions or page call-ups are displayed.
-On a page, some prompts are displayed following a logic dependent on external parameters. In such cases the promt is added or deleted.
-Prompts that are used on several pages have to be displayed at the same place on the different pages.
 e.g.: RETURN at 6L PRINT at 6R

 (7) Acknowledgement of User Action Each time the MCDU user activates an LS key or a mode key, he receives an acknowledgement of his action. The new page also displays an acknowledgement of the operator (insertion of a value in a line, message, etc ...). Examples:
-if the user wants to enter a value into a field, he will have the following messages: 'OUT OF RANGE' if the value is not within the range as expected by the system. 'FORMAT ERROR' if the value does not have the correct format.
-the message 'NOT ALLOWED' is displayed if an incorrect LS key is
activated. In case of the call-up of a function, the acknowledgement is made by deletion of the star '*'. This is next to the function name when the call-up is taken into account by the system. If the system is not available a message is displayed (e.g 'Printer Busy').
 (8) MCDU Data Entry Data are entered into the computer through the keyboard. First the data are entered from left to right into the scratchpad by activating the alphanumeric keys on the keyboard (similar to that of a type-writer). Only 22 characters may be entered into the scratchpad. If more than 22 are entered, they will be ignored. The 23rd key press will not be accepted by the computer and the computer will give no response. After entry of the data into the scratchpad, the date are moved from the scratchpad into the correct data field. By activating the adjacent LS key, the scratchpad is cleared.
The computer checks the data for format and acceptability (out of range, entry not allowed into the field, etc ...). If the data are incorrect, the system will leave the previous data in the data field and then display the associated message indicating the error in the scratchpad. To enter the correct data, the operator must do either of the following:
-Clear the message from the scratchpad by activating the CLR key. The data that was incorrect will appear in the scratchpad. The operator can then correct the data or clear it out.
-Enter new data into the scratchpad. This automatically clears the message being displayed and replaces the previous (incorrect) scratchpad data with the new data.
If the entry was rejected because an incorrect LS key was activated, the entry will be accepted if the correct LS key is activated. To clear the scratchpad of entered or incorrect data, the CLR key can be used. One press of the CLR key erases the last character entered

At the third press of the CLR key, all data in the scratchpad are deleted. The same process applies if the CLR key is held pressed. Immediately the last character is cleared, one second later, the second character is cleared, after 2 seconds the entire scratchpad will be cleared of any data. Certain data entries into a field also cause the displayed page to be changed automatically. In these cases, any scratchpad data are deleted. Otherwise, scratchpad data is retained when the displayed page is changed. During a page change, scratchpad entries are ignored.

 (9) Clearing Data Fields Data fields on the MCDU can be cleared using the CLR key. Activating the CLR key when the scratchpad is empty results in CLR being displayed. This appears in columns 6 to 8 of the scratchpad. Then, activating the LS key adjacent to the data field results in clearing that data and the scratchpad line is cleared. If the data have a default or computer calculated value, the data revert to this value. If the default value is cleared, the clearing has no effect and there is no message displayed. To remove a CLR prompt from the scratchpad, the CLR key can be activated again once. Or any alphanumeric key can be activated erasing the CLR in the scratchpad and entering the alphanumeric. The computer must distinguish between the CLR key and C-L-R being entered into the scratchpad via alphanumeric keys. C-L-R does not enable the clearing function.
