On-Board Reprogramming A subset of the reconfiguration data supplied by the DMU database is reprogrammable on-board the aircraft via the MCDU. All the GSE programmable constants are on-board temporary reprogrammable. A distinction is made between those constants, which are only allowed to be modified with AI authorization, and those constants, which are allowed to be modified by the customer.

Software Loading To achieve the complete functionality of the DMU, the operational software and the DMU database software has to be loaded into the DMU. the DMU operational software and database software is delivered on 6 seperate 3.5 inch (operational: 3, datbase: 3) 1.44 Mbyte floppy disks and are separately loadable. That means, loading of the database is not require necessarily reloading of the operational software. This is to speed up the process of software loading, if the operational software is not affected. Reloading of the operational software is always require also reloading of the database software. If the operational software and the DMU database software are loaded sperately, a compatibility code is used to ensure, that the database software matches the currently loaded operational software version. Loading of software into the DMU is performed automatically without any operator interactions via the MCDU. That means immediately after insertion of a software load disk in the MDDU, the software load process is started. Loading of either operational software or database software is only enabled, if the 'MDDU Available' discrete is set to 'Low'.

 (a) System Software Application Check Before the DMU starts overwriting the currently loaded operational software or database software, it is verified that the new update matches the DMU hardware configuration and A/C type identification.

The following controls are performed by the previous System Software and by the Boot Software before to erase the flash prom and to upload the new System Software:

 -
check that the discrete LOAD ENABLE or discrete PDL ENABLE is set. The set of one of those discretes implies that the A/C is on ground.

 -
check that the identification of the Boot Software on the PROM is in accordance with the one contained in file ACQUIT.MEM.

 -
check that the hardware configuration (Part Number, Number of CPU card and reference of CPU card) is in accordance with the one contained in the file ACQUIT.MEM.

 -
check that the engine types is in accordance with the one

contained in the file ACQUIT.MEM. If the first control failed there is no answer to the ADL (or PDL). If the first control is completed the DMU is read the file ACQUIT.MEM and perform the last 3 controls.
If they are completed the DMU is:
 -boot to the Boot Software
-erase the flash PROM (System Software and Setup Database memory)
-upload the new System Software The first time a new System Software runs all memorized data is cleared in:
 -Report mass memory,
-SAR mass memory (record and statistic),
 -Temporary change,
-Engine serial number, computed hours and cycles,
 -APU offset hours and cycles,
 -Divergence and delta N1 summary,
 -Bite history.
ACARS and printer queues are cleared.

 (b) Database SW Applicability Check The following controls are performed by the System Software before to erase the flash prom and to upload the new Setup Database:
-check that the discrete LOAD ENABLE or discrete PDL ENABLE is set.

The set of one of those discretes implies that the A/C is on
 ground.
 - check that the identification of the System Software in the
PROM is in accordance with the one contained in file
 ACQUIT.MEM.
 - check that the A/C identification (A/C tail) is in accordance
with the list contained in the file ACQUIT.MEM.
If the first control failed there is no answer to the ADL (or
 PDL).
If the first control is completed the DMU is read the file
ACQUIT.MEM and perform the last two controls. If they are
 completed the DMU is:
 - memorize all the list of A/C identification,
 - clear the Setup Database in flash PROM,
 - upload the Setup Database files,
 - verify the validity of the loading,
 - start system software process.
