F. Torque Tube Installation
SUBTASK 27-31-74-420-001
(1) Install the torque tube [1]:
(a) Put the torque tube assembly [1] in its position.
(b) Install the alignment pins to keep the bearing components in the inboard pivot clevis fittings
of the torque tube assembly [1].
(c) Lubricate the bushings, bolts, and bearings with grease, D00013.
(d) Connect the torque tube assembly [1] to the two outboard pivot brackets [3]:
1) At each of the torque tube assembly [1], install the bolts [16] with the bolt head inboard,
washers [19], washers [18], and nuts [17].

CAUTION: BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU INSTALL THE BOLTS [11]. YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE
TO THE BEARING COMPONENTS IF YOU HIT THE BOLTS [11] DURING THE
INSTALLATION.
(e) Connect the torque tube assembly [1] to the two inboard pivot brackets [2] and two reaction
links [10]:
1) At each end of the torque tube assembly [1], install the bushing [12] (on the right side
only), bushings [13], bolts [11], washers [14], and nuts [15].
a) Tighten the nuts [15] to 500-600 pound-inches (56.5-67.8 newton-meters).
CAUTION: DO NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT [15] AGAIN AFTER YOU TIGHTEN THE NUT
[20], YOU CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
2) Install the washers [21] and nuts [20].
a) Tighten the nuts [20] to 150-220 pound-inches (16.9-24.9 newton-meters).

(2) Install the mounting bracket [31] for the autopilot elevator actuators:
(a) Put the mounting bracket [31] in position.
(b) Install bolts [27] and washers [28].
(c) Install bolts [29] and washers [30].
(d) Install the bolts [32], washers [33] (under the bolt), washers [34] (under the nut), and nuts
[35].
(e) Install the bolts [36], washers [37] (under the bolt), washers [38] (under the nut), and nuts
[39].

(3) Install the autopilot elevator actuators on the mounting bracket [31]. To install them, do this task:
Autopilot Elevator Actuator Installation, TASK 22-11-26-400-801.

(4) Install the elevator control pushrods [4] to the torque tube assembly [1]:
(a) Install the bolts [26], washers [22], nuts [23], washers [24], and nuts [25].
NOTE: Do not tighten the nuts [24] and nuts [26]. The nuts [24] and nuts [26] will be
tightened after the adjustment.

(5) Remove rig pin E-5 of the rig pin kit, SPL-1585 from the elevator aft quadrant.

(6) Adjust the elevator control pushrods. To adjust them, do this task: Elevator Control Pushrods -
Adjustment, TASK 27-31-00-820-802.
