(5) Remove the horizontal stabilizer [26] (Figure 405):
NOTE: If the bolts are frozen, use equipment, SPL-2030 to assist in removal.
(a) At the horizontal stabilizer rear spar, do these steps:
1) Remove the nut [32] and washer [34] from the bolt [28].
2) Remove the nuts [35] and washers [34] from the bolts [38].
3) Remove the bolt [28], washer [29], and washer [27]. Keep a record of the bolt length
and location for the installation.
NOTE: It may be necessary for you to remove the seal support structure before
removing this bolt.
4) Remove the bolts [38], washers [37], and washers [27]. Keep a record of the each bolt
length and location for the installation.
NOTE: It may be necessary for you to remove the seal support structure before
removing these bolts.
5) Remove the pin [33], pins [36], and anti-rotation lock [31].
NOTE: If it is necessary, adjust the tension of the sling to help remove the pins.
6) For each bolt or pin, remove and inspect it. If bolt or pin shows signs of damage: pitting,
corrosion, no plating (pins only), galling (bolts only) or wear beyond drawing
tolerances, replace it with the improved bolt or pin. If the pins or bolts show no sign of
damage, it can be reinstalled or replaced with an improved front spar bolt or rear spar
pin designed to resist wear, galling, or corrosion.
NOTE: If an existing pin has missing plating, or plating that is damaged, but has no
pitting, corrosion, or galling, it can be repaired and installed. However, you
must still accomplish repeat inspections.
(b) At the horizontal stabilizer front spar, do these steps:
1) Remove the pins [44], nuts [43], washers [42], shims [45], washers [40], and bolts [41].
(c) Lift the horizontal stabilizer [26] out horizontally, then lower to the support stand.

(d) For each bolt or pin removed, inspect it and If bolts or pins shows signs of damage: pitting,
corrosion, no plating (pins only), galling (bolts only) or wear beyond drawing tolerances,
replace it with the improved bolt or pin. If the pins or bolts show no sign of damage, it can
be reinstalled or replaced with an improved front spar bolt or rear spar pin designed to
resist wear, galling, or corrosion.
