F. Horizontal Stabilizer Installation
SUBTASK 27-41-11-480-003
(1) Install the sling, SPL-2035 to the horizontal stabilizer [26] (Figure 404).

(2) Lubricate the bolts, washers, bushings in the front and rear spar fittings, and pins with corrosion
inhibiting non-drying paste, G50136.
NOTE: Do not put the corrosion inhibiting non-drying paste, G50136 on the threaded portion of
the bolts.

(3) Lubricate the bolt threads and nut threads with compound, D50004.
NOTE: This anti-sieze compound will prevent galling of the threads.

(4) Install the horizontal stabilizer [26] (Figure 405):
(a) Lift and put the horizontal stabilizer [26] in its position.
(b) Align the horizontal stabilizer [26] with the rear and front fittings on the airplane.
(c) Temporarily install the bolts [41] on the front rear spar of the horizontal stabilizer [26].
NOTE: You can use the stabilizer alignment tool, C55008-1, to align the stabilizer in place
of using the bolts [41].
(d) At the rear spar of the horizontal stabilizer [26], do these steps:
1) Install the anti-rotation lock [31], pin [33], washer [30], washer [27], washer [29], bolt [28]
with the bolt heads either forward or aft, washer [34], and nut [32].
2) Install the pins [36], washers [39], washers [27], washers [37], bolts [38] with the bolt
heads either forward or aft, washers [34], and nuts [35].
3) Measure the clearance between the bushing faces of the external and internal
lugs,Figure 405.
NOTE: This clearance measurement is for the sum of the two clearances (A1 and A2)
at each of the three rear spar clevises.

a) Make sure the maximum allowable clearance for each clevis at the center (failsafe)
and lower lugs (sum of the two clearances, A1 and A2, at each lug) is 0.032 in.
(0.81 mm).
b) Make sure the maximum allowable clearance for the upper clevis (sum of the two
clearances, A1 and A2) is 0.046 in. (1.17 mm).
4) Tighten the nut [32] to 575 ±75 in-lb (65 ±9 Nm)and nuts [35] to 575 ±75 in-lb
(65 ±9 Nm)but keep a clearance of 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) -- 0.090 in. (2.29 mm) after the
nut is tightened.
NOTE: The clearance of 0.005 in. (0.13mm) - 0.090 in. (2.29mm) after the nut [32], and [35]
are tightened, is taken between the Stabilizer Center Section Clevis and Washer
[34].
(e) At the front spar of the horizontal stabilizer [26], do these steps:
1) Remove the bolts [41].
2) Measure the clearance between the bushing faces of the lugs and clevises.
3) Install the shims [47] to get a maximum clearance of 0.005 in. (0.13 mm) for each side of
the lugs (maximum of 0.010 in. (0.25 mm) total allowable clearance for each clevis).
4) Install the washers [40], bolts [41], washers [42], shims [45], and nuts [43].
NOTE: Shim washers [48] and/or [49] may be added between the nut and washer to
align the bolt pin hole and the nut.
a) Tighten the nuts [43] to an initial torque of 50 in-lb (5.6 Nm).
b) Make sure the stepped portion of the bolts [41] touch the washers [42] or shim
washers [48] or [49], if used.
NOTE: If it is necessary, remove the shims [45] until the stepped portion of the
bolts [41] touch the washers [42] or shim washers [48] or [49], if used.
c) Make sure that the gap "X" between the shims [45] and washers [42] is not greater
than 0.002 in. (0.05 mm).
NOTE: If it is necessary, add shims [45] until the gap "X" is between 0.002 in.
(0.05 mm) - 0.000 in. (0.00 mm).
d) Tighten the nuts [43] to 950 in-lb (107.3 Nm) -- 1400 in-lb (158.2 Nm).
e) Install the new pins [44].
NOTE: Tighten or loosen the nuts [43], if it is necessary to get the pin hole
alignment.

(5) Remove the sling, SPL-2035 from the horizontal stabilizer [26].
(a) Remove the fasteners from the hoisting sling.
(b) Install the bolts [1] and bolts [2] on the horizontal stabilizer [26].

(6) If the elevator is not attached to the horizontal stabilizer [26], then, do this task: Elevator -
Installation, TASK 27-31-11-400-801.

(7) If the elevator is attached to the horizontal stabilizer [26], then connect the elevator control
pushrod to the elevator:
(a) Move the elevator by hand to the neutral position.
