The Autothrottle (A/T) System computation is performed by the Thrust Management Function (TMF) of the Flight Management Computer (FMC). A description of the A/T system is covered in the thrust management portion of the Flight Management Computer System (FMCS) (AMM 34-61-00/001).

The Flight Director commands, AFDS annunciations and warnings, and the Autothrottle and Autoland annunciations are displayed on the Primary Flight Displays (PFDs) and the main Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) Display.

All flight faults from the FCCs are recorded by the Central Maintenance Computer (CMC). The CMC also initiates the ground tests for the AFDS. Information contained in the CMC can be interrogated through the FMCS Control Display Unit (CDU).

The AFDS consists of three separate autopilot channels and a single Mode Control Panel (MCP). Each autopilot channel consists of a Flight Control Computer (FCC) with associated servos and displays. Each FCC contains all the logic and signal handling circuitry for pitch, roll, and yaw axis control. The AFDS has autoland approach capability when two or three autopilot channels are engaged. Normal climb, cruise, descent, and approach functions are available with any one channel engaged. The airplane is not certified for autopilot takeoff; however, the flight director is available for takeoff guidance.

The Autopilot/Flight Director System coverage consists of the following sections:
(a)
Autopilot/Flight Director System (AMM 22-10-00/001) provides a general description and operation of the AFDS. This section covers all autopilot and flight director modes of operation.
(b)
Autopilot/Flight Director System Power (AMM 22-11-00/001) covers the general description of ac and dc power distribution to components common to the AFDS. This section also covers the operation of ac and dc power provided to the three FCCs and the Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS) MCP, and operation of autoland bus isolation.
(c)
Autopilot/Flight Director Pitch Axis Control (AMM 22-12-00/001) covers the general description of the autopilot/flight director pitch control. This section also covers the component details and operation of the Elevator Autopilot Servo (EAS), and the EAS electrohydraulic servovalve (EHSV) and solenoid valves.
(d)
Autopilot/Flight Director Roll and Yaw Axes Control (AMM 22-13-00/001) covers the general description of the autopilot/flight director roll and yaw control. This section also covers the component details and operation of the Lateral Autopilot Servo (LAS), Central Lateral Control Packages (CLCPs), Rollout Power Control Packages (RPCPs) and Override Mechanism, and the LAS, CLCP, and RPCP electrohydraulic servovalve (EHSV) and solenoid valves.

Autopilot/Flight Director System Warning and Annunciation (AMM 22-14-00/001) covers the description of the autopilot/flight director system warning and annunciation. This section also cover the component details and operation of the master warning and caution lights, Primary Flight Display (PFD) mode annunciations and warnings, and main Engine Indicating and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) autopilot and autoland displays.
