MAINTENANCE MANUAL
2) Once HDG HOLD mode is engaged, it can be disabled if CMD is disabled or the F/D is turned off. Heading hold is also disabled by selection of the following modes: HDG select, LNAV, LOC capture, or GA.
(e) Heading Select 1) Heading select mode acquires and maintains the heading selected on the MCP. It has 6 selectable bank angle limits: AUTO and 5°-25° in 5 degree steps. The AUTO position selects a B/A based on true airspeed and heading error with a maximum angle of 25 degrees. The heading select mode can be manually called by pushing the HDG SEL switch on the MCP. a) If the HDG SEL knob is rotated to the desired heading before the SEL switch is pressed, the AFDS commands a turn towards that heading in the direction of the smallest turn angle.
b) If the SEL switch is pressed first, the AFDS commands generated are always in the direction the HDG SEL knob is turned.
(f) Lateral Navigation Mode (LNAV) 1) The LNAV mode responds to FMC lateral steering commands to acquire and track selected flight plan paths. LNAV mode is selected by pressing the LNAV switch/light on the MCP. Pressing the LNAV switch/light arms the LNAV mode, provided localizer is not captured. LNAV arm is then displayed white on the PFDs. LNAV ARM has no effect on the current lateral axis mode and may be disengaged by pressing the LNAV switch/light a second time. 2) The same signal that lights the LNAV switch/light is provided, by the MCP, to the Flight Management System (FMS) to enable LNAV steering commands from the FMC (Ref 34-61-00).
