C. The FCC is the primary computing component for the AFDS. It provides Autopilot (A/P) commands to the servos that move the control surfaces, Flight Director (F/D) commands to the PFD to direct manual pilot control, and system monitoring and fault detection for the CMCS.
D. The AFCS MCP is in the autopilot system to provide flight crew inputs for control of the autopilot/flight director and autothrottle functions. The control panel allows the pilots to: engage the autopilots, arm/disarm the autothrottle, turn the flight directors ON or OFF, control airspeed, control vertical speed, select altitude and heading, arm/disarm the localizer and approach modes, and select the Flight Management Computer (FMC) as the source for vertical and lateral navigation control.
E. The location of the primary AFDS components are shown in Figure 1.
2. Flight Control Computer (FCC)_______________________
A. The left, center, and right FCCs are identical and contain all logic and signal handling circuitry for direct pitch axis control (elevators and stabilizer trim), roll axis control (ailerons), and yaw axis control (rudders). Yaw control is active only during a multi-channel approach and rollout.
B. Each FCC provides autopilot command output signals which drive hydraulic servos that deflect the control surfaces. Each FCC also provides flight director data to the Electronics Interface Units (EIUs) for steering commands and mode annunciation display on the PFDs.
C. FCC program pin connections are permanently wired at the shelf connector. The pin connections provide inputs to the FCC, which allow the selection of the configuration options. These pin connections can be checked by a CMC ground test in the < 22 AUTOPILOT FLT DIR test group. The test is FCC CONFIGURATION. The CMC displays the decimal value of the bit pattern created by the grounded and open pins in each option group. The following is a list of the options and functions the program pins control.
(1) AIRCRAFT
(a) Five pin connections provide 32 combinations at the FCC shelf for identifying the aircraft type. The FCC reads these pins as a binary code.
