Using air data test set and altitude reporting code list (Fig. 501), apply a static pressure to obtain test altitudes (between 0 and 35,000 feet) to verify following: 1) Binary code lines (A1 thru C4 and D4) between transponder
and altitude source are not open or shorted to ground. 2) Appropriate altimeter is within tolerance (AMM 34-12-00). 3) At each altitude, the difference between ATC test set
display and altimeter reading does not exceed | 125 feet.

The altimeter reading may be increased or decreased to see if 125 ft tolerance can be met PROVIDED the ATC test set continues to display the designated altitude.
(e) Repeat step (d) decreasing altitude to field elevation.

Position function switch ATC control module to OFF or STBY.

If no longer required remove electrical power.
6. System Test - ATC System - Using Instrument Flight Research ATC - 601
_____________________________________________________________________
A. General
(1) The system test is a more complete check of the ATC system. The system test first does the ATC Operational Test. Then it uses a ramp test set to examine the left and the right ATC system.
B. Equipment and Materials
(1)
Transponder Test Set, IFR Model ATC-601
(2)
Air Data Test set, Castleberry AT700-2, Castleberry Instr & Avionics, Austin, TX; or equivalent.

D. Prepare to test ATC system
NOTE: The test set is a source of interference for radio and L-band
____ radar equipment. Turn the test set off as soon as the test is completed or when other near by airplane do radio checks.
CAUTION: DO NOT PLACE THE REMOTE TEST SET ANTENNA CLOSER THAN 15 INCHES
_______ (.40 METERS) TO THE AIRCRAFT ANTENNA WITH THE TEST SET ON. THIS WILL CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE TEST SET.
(1)
Put the remote test set antenna between 6 and 300 feet (2 and 90 meters) from the ATC antenna for the related system.
(2)
Put the test set antenna in position towards the aircraft antenna.
(3)
Connect the coax cable from the remote test set antenna to the test set.
(4)
Close ATC System and Altitude Source (ALTIMETER or CADC) circuit breakers.

(5) Set the PWR switch on the test set to the ON position.
NOTE: The test set is a source of interference for radio and L-band

(6) Push the SETUP key to enter the SETUP menu.
NOTE: For information about the battery test, timing and
____ recharging refer to the operation section of the test set operators manual.

Enter the HEIGHT and RANGE (in feet) of the ATC antenna.
(a)
Use the slew keys to change the values.
(b)
Use the select keys to change the items.
(8)
Enter the gain listed on the test set antenna into the GAIN_1030 and GAIN_1090 field.
(9)
Enter the cable loss listed on the cable in the LOSS field.
E. Test ATC system
CAUTION:_______DO NOT USE CODES 7500, 7600-7677, AND 7700-7777. THESE ARE THESE ARE EMERGENCY CODES.

Set the switches on ATC control panel as follows:

Transponder Select - Applicable system
(b)
Altitude Reporting - OFF
(c)
Code Select - 0000
(2)
Do the ATC system Operational Test
(3)
Push the AUTO TEST key on the test set.
(a)
Make sure the results of the last auto test are shown.
